End of the neo-con dream
BBC News ^ | 21 December 2006 | By Paul Reynolds

The neo-conservative dream faded in 2006.

The ambitions proclaimed when the neo-cons' mission statement "The Project for the New American Century" was declared in 1997 have turned into disappointment and recriminations as the crisis in Iraq has grown.

[snip]

The neo-conservatives were called that because they sought to re-establish what they felt were true conservative values in the Republican Party and the United States.

They wanted to stop what they felt were the isolationist tendencies that had developed under President Clinton, and even under the pragmatic President George Bush senior.

They saw the war in Iraq as their big chance of showing how the "New American Century" might work.

They predicted the development of democratic values in a region lacking in them and, in that way, the removal of any threat to the United States just as the democratisation of Germany and Japan after World War II had transformed Europe and the Pacific.

Euro American envy. In the past 6 years the U.S.A. created 9 million jobs. The EU, Pu created a mere 1 million!
They can keep bashing but they are Scr----.

That's the attitude: let's write-off entire nations for whatever reason seems appropriate at the moment. How soon can we start complaining that they've have written us off as well? /sarc

One time I needed to do some business at an american embassy in europe and had a friend tagging along.

You could not imagine the shock in their eyes when they saw the sheer line up to apply for visas to enter the USA. This does not include those who were going to get the automatic entry under the visa waiver program.

Your envy argument is why they created the euro, the EU's very survival is tied to the euro becoming the worlds reserve currency. The fact it has not leaves the EU with nothing but to try and "knock off the dollar" by stiring anti-americanism.

The only smart thing the british did was not change over to the euro.

How more successful can they be? Let's see. Their dream of war against the enemies of Israel has succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Next North Korea. They manipulated Bush to do the Iraq do-able cakewalk instead of getting bin Laden. Rummy's doing it on the cheap has ensured we are now trapped there. We cannot afford to get out.

They have turned into enemies those in the area where Bush, the elder, had allies. The end of the neocon dream is America'a nightmare. It is also Israel's. Neither of us is more secure. They have created a universal desire of aspiring countries to have the atom weapon - as don't go into the future with America without it. The neocons have created perpetual war, their dreams have come true.

Ah yes, lets talk about the british contribution to fixing mess you created.

There was Basra in 2003, where American troops cleared the way to the city and the brits just sat on the outskirts for the next 3 weeks brewing tea.

Then there is Afghanistan where Helmand province where british troops are narrowly avoiding getting their asses bounced out of the place, being saved time after time by the United States Air Force. Brits having asses saved by the US, now there's a theme !

"Their signal enterprise was the invasion of Iraq and their failure to produce results is clear. Precisely the opposite has happened,"

Besides not knowing how to spell, the author's premise is wrong. Incorrectly stating that Iraq is the "single" enterprise does not make it so. Democracy in Iraq has been a success. The current problem is outside interference from Iran and Syria attempting to undermine Iraq and Lebanon.

The EU is a direct threat to our position in the world, and should be treated as such. This includes ALL its member states with the exception of the new eastern states who are not too far gone to save.

Wrong you warm-beer drinking sod. They were "neo" because they switched from left to right.

"neocons have created perpetual war"

I think your logic is messed up. How have "neocons created perpetual war" ? And who do you mean by "neocons"?

This is the type who in 1940 were calling for negotiations with Hitler. Only a fool would call Churchill--as secular as person as one can think of--as Manichean." But he knew that the enemy was opposed to every notion of western civilization and therefore ought to be opposed.

>>>The neocons have created perpetual war, their dreams have come true.<<<

FDR and Truman were the neocon's that won WWII. The twadle you write would have gotten you a good butt kicking, or better, back in those far better times - when America was made of Patriots and not 51% appeasing surrender monkeys.

Order another latte, stand back and let real men take care of our country!

"How did they manipulate Bush? And please identify who you mean by neocons."

Neocons convinced Bush that Saddam's non-exising WMD were more of a threat to us than AQ/bin Laden. The neocons cross political lines, religions, military, columnists, etc. - they are identified by their advocacy of war against Iraq, Iran, Syria and North Korea. Perpetual war. They are not a 'who' they are a 'what'.
