U.N. Security Council imposes sanctions on Iran
8 minutes ago
The U.N. Security Council on Saturday unanimously imposed sanctions on Iran's trade in sensitive nuclear materials and ballistic missiles, in a move aimed at getting Tehran to halt uranium enrichment work.
As useless as the UN is...this is pretty amazing. Never thought this would be unanimous.
Anyone heard form Ahmadangnutjob yet?
Now we'll see if our ships on station are provoked into action.
19:19 Iran: Sanctions come at behest of Israel, which is a criminal regime (Haaretz)
19:17 Iranian UN envoy: Nuclear weapons in Israel`s hands a grave threat (Haaretz)
19:17 Iranian envoy to UN: Sanctions are `groundless, punitive measures` (Haaretz)
U.S. envoy: We will seek further action if Iran fails to comply
"Today we are placing Iran in the small category of states under Security Council sanctions," acting U.S. Ambassador Alejandro Wolff told the council before the 15-0 vote - which included a yes vote by Qatar.
"We will not hesitate to return to this body to seek further action should Iran fail to comply," Wolff added.
I hope the Mullah's don't hurt themselves from laughing too hard either. It seems to be a common ailment when faced with the awesome power represented by UN sanctions. The loss of 3% of Segway imports has been known to cause even the most smelly jihadis to suffer these bouts of lunatic laughter in the face of utmost peril.
No but the Iranian people might.
It's a shot. And a lot less expensive then tearing up things, which I'm sure someone will do if need be.
On top of the fact that the vote for sanctions was unanimous.
BFD...
I'm not sure anyone can take them out from the air. Iran has buried these facilities under mountains. Seems an invasion would be needed to ensure they are destroyed in any event. Iran learned a lesson after the Israelis took out their reactor in the 1980s.
Unless they use nukes, Israel doesn't have ability to strike Iran in any meaningful way.
We have the ability, but don't have the will.
Wasn't that the reactor next to our flag on Mars?
What resolution number is this one?
Oh! Excuse me!! I din't mean ta git all het up!!! (grin)
Merry Christmas and all that... (while we celebrate this historic UN-action)
And a few years from now, the anti-Americans will blame the sanctions for the plight of the Iranian people.
He will be heard laughing over the back of a sheep.
*concern for Iranian people
*double snark for Iranian govt
If a "President Kerry" had obtains these UN sanctions on Iran, the news media would be filled 24/7 with non-stop praise for his "amazing global diplomacy."
When President Bush achieves these sanctions, the news media downplays them, then turns around and complains that GWB is a war monger who shoots first and asks questions later.
...it's a bit like how the news media would respond if Karl Rove stole and destroyed classified military documents from the National Archives, versus how the news media treats Sandy Berger for stealing and destroying classified military documents from the National Archives.
It's one heckofa double standard.
