Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Disturbing statistics on the number of Hispanics who daily go hungry in America was released at a press conference on Wednesday by the National Council of La Raza (NCLR). The national Hispanic civil rights group found that nearly one in five people lack nutritious food.
NCLR officials said in a press release that increasing federal nutrition assistance programs would help decrease the growing "food insecurity" faced by 19.6 percent of Latinos in America.
"Lack of access to resources is forcing far too many Latino families into choices no one should have to make, such as between having a roof over their heads or putting food on the table. A lack of affordable, nutritious food also has devastating health consequences, such as increasing hunger and obesity, affecting not only the Latino community but the well-being of our entire nation," Janet Murgua, NCLR President and CEO, said in the statement.
Hispanics are the largest minority in America.
BBC news reported on Thursday that one of the study's authors, Jennifer Ng'andu, said that when it came to issues of hunger and malnutrition in the U.S. that the Latino community was "practically invisible."
According to the study, although lack of food is more of a problem for Hispanics than for whites in America, it is still African Americans who are most likely to go hungry every day.
The study found that the number of Hispanics going hungry was three percent higher than for non-Hispanic whites and eight percent lower than for non-Hispanic blacks, BBC reported.
We have a food-bank in my neighborhood. The cheapest cars in the vicinity are those owned by the working stiffs whose taxes are paying for it.
easy!
I'm hungry everyday from 1130 to lunch hour and from 500 to dinnertime. Sometimes I'm even hungry other times.
Therefore, I'm hungry everyday! Sometimes I even have to skip a meal because I'm too busy at work. And I feel there's no way out of this horrible situation, what can I possibly do? I'm trapped! I need your assistance so I can get my free lunch!
Now, If only one in five mexican americans goes hungry...that means that 4 out of five EAT ALL DAY LONG!
Does it have have the tartar?
That stuff is nasty. It's made from ground up rats and if you don't believe that just spell tartar backwards.
American poverty is the envy of the third world.
Just when you think America had enough race-baiting, "activist," bigots, along comes The National Council of "The Race" and CAIR. Geeeesh. One of the disadvantages to being the greatest country on the planet is that you attract huge numbers of parasites from all over the world.
I'm starving to death because I'm too fat to lean forward to grab the bag of chips.
Also known as "muffin tops" or a "busted can of biscuits".
You get the visual.
Why aren't there any skinny Mexicans. I don't believe I have ever seen one.
LOL! I make my "ratrat" from Mayo and Sweet Pickle Relish. Buy it? You can afford to BUY tartar sauce? Man, you're rich, LOL!
Now, now! Don't be hatin'! Just write a check already, would ya? ;)
Someone get me a burger.
REBECCA: Excuse me, I'm Rebecca Demore from the homeless shelter.
ELAINE: Oh, hi.
REBECCA: Are you the ones leaveing the muffing pieces behind our shelter?
ELAINE: You been enjoying them?
REBECCA: They're just stumps.
ELAINE: Well they're perfectly edible.
REBECCA: Oh, so you just assume that the homeless will eat them, they'll eat anything?
MR. LIPPMAN: No no, we just thought...
REBECCA: I know what you thought. They don't have homes, they don't have jobs, what do they need the top of a muffin for? They're lucky to get the stumps.
ELAINE: If the homeless don't like them the homeless don't have to eat them.
REBECCA: The homeless don't like them.
ELAINE: Fine.
REBECCA: We've never gotten so many complaints. Every two minutes, "Where is the top of this muffin? Who ate the rest of this?"
ELAINE: We were just trying to help.
REBECCA: Why don't you just drop off some chicken skins and lobster shells.
ELAINE: I think I might.
They want not for the beer!
