Cell phone location tip for Kims not heeded Police report - An Edge Wireless employee gave state officers precise data two days before Kati Kim was found Thursday, December 21, 2006 MICHELLE ROBERTS The engineer whose cell phone records helped find the Kim family in a search-and-rescue drama that riveted the nation told police the Kims were "most likely in the vicinity of Bear Camp Road" two full days before they were found, according to a Portland police detective's report.

The Edge Wireless engineer provided a far more precise idea of where to look for James and Kati Kim and their two young daughters than had previously been understood.

The Portland Police Bureau report, released Wednesday, said Detective Michael Weinstein immediately relayed that information the evening of Dec. 2 to the Oregon State Police, which headed the investigation into the San Francisco family's disappearance.

"The Josephine County Sheriff's Office and state police did not order a search of the area with a heat-seeking helicopter that Saturday night or Sunday, even though the Oregon National Guard had one fueled and awaiting orders. Sara Rubrecht, emergency services manager for Josephine County, did not return calls Wednesday seeking comment."

Well there ya go. Don't be tellin' those gubmint peeples how to do thar jobs. They R perfessionals.

I am not sure it pertains to all of Oregon - the Mount Hood SAR effort was well coordinated and executed well...

As for Josephine County - there are some real problems over there. Don't get lost there!

Remember the Josephine County sheriff deputy saying that Kim was taking off his pants as a sign for the searchers to find him ?

Ah, give her a break...she was a part time 911 operator after all.

And the only one to apply for the job.

Well, go to school and get a four year degree. Then you can work for the Government and hand out welfare, or get a job where you can be "qualified" to make life and death decisions. Unfortunately those decisions tend more to death than life. But hey - that's what we pay taxes for.

5 years on the job...the break she should get is probation and not jail time!

I dont think you realize that most of the country's services are staffed with people like this....especially 911...why do you think you are always hearing those crazy phone calls on the news?

Some are born to greatness. Others have greatness thrust upon them.

Still others are over their heads when the chips are down and simply are never up to the tasks they are given.

Unfortunately, the government hires them and people die.

Most ECC's (emergency command centers) have a very high turnover due to stress. The job is NOT an easy one and the workers who do not go out on stress burnout or are simply nuts.
I have known quite a few of these people and they definitely do not last long.

Not taking up for anyone, just speaking the truth.

I think that the timeline shows that police mistakenly pronounced that Bear Camp Road had been cleared by the owner of the lodge after this report had come in from the wireless service provider.

None of the missteps on behalf of the authorities I've read amount to the grevious missteps taken by the Kim family, I'm sorry to say.

People venturing out into the wilderness need to understand that the world is not safety-engineered like an amusement park ride.

Blaming them for what?

Someone in a position for 5 years getting paid taxpayer's dollars and then ignoring three direct leads from two locals and one wireless professional who all had real evidence that would have led to a rescue on either Saturday or Sunday...so she could follow up a lead from an employee of her husband?????

All she had to do was make a phone call-THATS IT.

Would you want Sara Rubrecht coordinating a search effort for someone in your family?

She is a disgrace to all SAR - not only did she let the Kim family down - she let down everyone that worked on this.

How and why is this person still even in this position?

And yes we cannot forget James Kim made mistakes and he paid dearly for it - he is dead and you can rest assured he won't ever make that mistake again...

but will Sara Rubrecht make the same mistakes again? Would you be willing to bet on that?

Sorry to differ KG9 Kid...but you really need to read all of the information about this. They were not venturing out into the wilderness. This is not like Mount Hood...

This is a family that got lost on a road!

Any map you look at (including the one from State of Oregon) that they used shows it is a major road.

Some of the maps say the road is closed in the winter - last time I checked winter starts tomorrow...

Many locals in the area have clearly stated anyone could have been lost like them and in fact it happens frequently fortunately for most it is during the summer.

The area is very confusing.
