WARSAW, Poland - Lawmakers have drawn up a resolution naming Jesus Christ as the honorary king of Poland, but have failed to win support from the country's powerful Roman Catholic church.
Lawmakers for the ruling Law and Justice party and League of Polish Families as well as the opposition Peasants Party back the resolution, said Szymon Ruman, spokesman for parliamentary speaker Marek Jurek.
However, the proposal currently has the support of only 46 members in the 460-seat parliament, well short of the necessary 231 votes to pass. Ruman said the resolution would likely be voted on sometime after Jan. 1.
Backing from the church in this strongly Catholic country would be crucial for building support for the proposal, but on Wednesday several bishops criticized it, and said parliament should stay out of religious affairs.
"Let parliament deal with passing better laws that we need," Gdansk Archbishop Tadeusz Goclowski said.
"This kind of action, although it may stem from good will, sounds a bit like propaganda," said bishop Tadeusz Pieronk.

Today the spirit in Poland is a lot like it was here in America in the 1700's:
On April 18, 1775 John Adams and John Hancock were at the home of Rev. Jonas Clarke, a Lexington pastor and militia leader. That same night Paul Revere arrived to warn them of the approaching Redcoats. The next morning British Major Pitcairn shouted to an assembled regiment of Minutemen; "Disperse, ye villains, lay down your arms in the name of George the Sovereign King of England." The immediate response of Rev. Jonas Clarke or one of his company was:
"We recognize no Sovereign but God and no King but Jesus."
Merry Christmas everyone!

Maybe they can name Jesus as Ceasar and put Him on the coins.

If I were Polish, I wouldn't vote for Jesus until He comes out with a clear platform against domestic arms control.

If Poland continues along such a path, they may become a powerful and prosperous nation. I'm curious, though, why the Catholic church would stand in opposition to such a measure.

They might not like the idea of elected officials legislating their doctrine. Just a guess.

Somehow this move will not contribute to the reduction of dumb pollack jokes.

According to the book "The Light and The Glory",in 1773, A Crown-appointed governor wrote a letter to the Board of Trade in England, and stated that most Americans would say:"No king but King Jesus!"
Must have been a popular phrase of the day.

"This proposal has the support of only 46 members in the 460-seat parliament" this proves the old estimate that in any random group about 10 % are crackpots.

It's a nice gesture, but it DOES have risk. There is the risk of staining Jesus with the deeds of the country, and ultimately soiling His reputation with it. And in some ways it might be demeaning, anyway.
Mine is kind of like the argument Roosevelt had against putting "In God We Trust" on our currency.

An exercise in futility. Jesus Christ is already King of Kings and Lord of Lords. What Poland is doing is to demote Jesus. Risky business.

You are correct.
Our Founding Fathers firmly rejected the notion of a state religion, as well.
Looks like Poland is set to follow the Founders' example. Good for Poland.

It's not Poland. It's just some Polish politicians. Some very special ones :-)))
I've just read statements of several Polish bishops, who strongly oppose this idea.
