Experts: New Orleans needs image upgrade post-Katrina

Shifting the nation’s perception of New Orleans as a drowned city of Third World proportions remains in the forefront of new Gulf South marketing, advertising experts said Dec. 7 at a chapter meeting of the American Marketing Association. “(Marketing to tourists) is going to take a grassroots effort to combat the negative publicity,” said Mark Mayer, president of Peter A. Mayer Advertising of New Orleans.

Although Mayer is optimistic about the city’s future, combating the damaged brand of New Orleans is key in the short term, he said.

“Tourism is alive and well (in New Orleans),” said Zehnder Communications President Jeff Zehnder. “We’re far more tourism-ready than the country believes.”

Holly McCollum, Keating Magee Marketing chief integration officer, said marketers can capitalize on national media attention to put New Orleans in a positive light.

A difficulty in recruiting and retaining talent, the Internet’s prominent post-Katrina emergence and a new marketing demographic, particularly the Hispanic culture, were among other topics covered.

Good luck New Orleans... the day Ray Naggin was re-elected was the day I knew I would never, ever visit again.

Any community that reelects a crook like William Jefferson (D-LA) to represent them in Congress goes on my DO NOT VISIT list. Sorry, New Orleans, our paths will never cross again.

I am with you 100%---'WHINE AND CRIME' should be the motto for New Orleans---the second thing that set me off was the National D-Day Museum being changed to the National WW2 Museum---as a D-Day vet of Normandy (who is a plankowner of the Museum, I resent the 'wheels' like Director Mueller selling us out for the 'big bucks' from Congresscritters and his shot for more dough to line pockets in the crime ridden city)---although I have been there several times over the years the place kept getting filthier and more rundown on each visit---then again, what should we expect from a city and state run exclusively by the RATS?

"I thought most of New Orlean's criminals went to Texas".

It looks as if they all know that N.O. needs a "people upgrade," and also that the most anybody can hope for is an "image upgrade."

Image upgrade?

Shoooot, I'd be happy if they'd just pick up the garbage before the whole city reeked of it!

An image of New Orleans? Ha ha. This should be made into a national contest. How about, "A cop on every corner but the murders still go on".

First off, Thank you for your service. God bless you. You guys saved the world.

I agree with you about New Orleans.

I like reading thedeadpelican.com, it's a great take on LA.
