I don't think the President is "side-stepping" has past comment. Each his comments are in different venues and not in conflict.

What else is he going to say? "No comment"? They'd have crucified him if he said that. Maybe "Up yours" would have been better, or "Get lost."

What do people want him to say?

Would "The lesbian hedonistic whore should burn in hell" be sufficient?

Sheesh.

It's exactly this awkward situation that should have made Dick Cheney say "no thanks" when G. W. Bush offered him the VP-slot six years ago.

The media is going to make a circus out of this, and it's going to hurt the GOP going into 2008...

As President Bush says-every life is sacred.
An innocent child is going to be born-the baby is not going to be aborted or used for stem cell research.
While I believe that children need both a father and mother , this child will probably have a better life than those poor kids who have Britney Spears and that Fedex thing as a father.
The Cheneys will be the grandparents, more positive influences for the child.
I don't see this as a defining moment for the Republicans-it's a unique and discrete situation for the Cheney family.
Now that the baby is on the way, President Bush was kind and wished everyone well.
I cannot imagine doing anything different.

>> "fine mom"

Given the technical ambiguity that exists in this 'new age' of guardianship, wouldn't the correct comment be "fine parent"?

Also, "fine" is a striking alternative to "good" and "great".

President Bush has an elegance to him that some on this thread will never understand.

Far from being a "fine mom," Mary Cheney is behaving on the level of an animal being bred for its offspring, so she and her partner in delusion can selfishly continue playing "pretend family."

What does anyone expect him to say publicly? He's too much of a gentleman to excoriate her and her 'partner' in a public manner, even if he did feel they were wrong in their choice.
