EUROPEAN SEX SURVEY - Teens from Germany, Iceland Ditch Virginity Early
DER SPIEGEL ^ | December 14, 2006 | dgs/ap

German kids like their sex. A survey of European teen sex habits has found that only pubescents from Iceland are quicker to jump in the sack. But when it comes to safety, the Dutch are tops.

The casual observer in Germany might be forgiven for thinking the Germans are oversexed. Pornographic cinemas and blush-inducing sex shops are a familiar part of the urban landscape, while exposed breasts are a common sight on advertising billboards and magazine covers.

With all that stimulating material around, it's not surprising that young Germans apparently have sex on the brain. A newly-released World Health Organization (WHO) report on sexual habits among teenagers in 26 European countries reveals that German teens are quick off the mark when it comes to losing their cherry; the average age at which Germans -- both boys and girls -- first have sex is 16.2.

Homeschooling is illegal in Germany.

************

Fortunately, at least so far, it's legal here. I believe it's also increasing.

All this sex, yet the fertility rate keeps going down.

...the WHO's Gunta Lazdane commented, "It's not the age that counts, it's when young people are ready for it."

This tells us about all we need to know about WHO, doesn't it?

I was "ready" for it at age 13, but that doesn't mean it was good or healthy for me to indulge in it, disregarding everything else just because I was "ready".

Morality, loving marital relationships, and the sustenance of a healthy family and society can all be thrown completely out the window for the sake of fleeting pleasure, the urge to rut without consequence and then try and justify it with a "clean" conscience.

Premarital sex is not a "win-win" proposition, even without getting an STD. Sex is a vital component of human nature, and a powerful one. Abusing it has consequences for individuals and the society in which they live.

When sex is universally cheapened to a physical act little more important than shaking hands, the societal and personal alarm bells should be going off loudly. There are a lot more longterm downsides to teen and premarital sex for society and the individuals involved than STDs...

...(everybody, please, now add your own personal experiences and observations here in the blank. I know you have them)...

The Bullsh!t Flag should be flying high on all this libertine nonsense. "Feeling good" doesn't justify doing it. The long term consequences of immoral behavior (and that is what this is) are severe for individuals and society. Wishing otherwise and listening to the mavens at WHO doesn't change the real world because that is living in a dream world.

Sorry NY was in much better shape than new delhi or Berlin in the years before WW2.No, we did'nt take advantage of europes bad luck although your guys shooting yourselves in the foot hastened the result(kind of like you all are doing now with the EU). We would have still surpassed you if ww2 never happened. Capitalism > socialism.

You Americans should be careful because your own birth rate is also in decline since many years. Maybe you live 25 years longer but then...

Once the Muslims fix the problem in Europe, that should convince the stragglers in America to fix the problem internally, and that extra 25 years should be just enough time.

"Here's the deal: you either make moral choices and judgments in your own life, or you don't.
Europeans have long demonstrated that they don't:
I don't think the unimpeded rise of Nazism and the accompanying anti-Semitism was just some anomalous case."

America had slavery, genocide against the Indians, lynch mobs against blacks, and legally-enforced racial segregation until the 1960s. When one lives in a glass house, it is best to not throw stones. There is not a noticeably more moral history on either side of the Atlantic.

"clearly they put too much importance on sexuality as "bad" or "Evil". Poor kid."

not necessarily, there are many other reasons why a 15 year old would not be able to handle the emotions associated with a physical relationship that went wrong.

"Europe is dying, but the sex is great."

America is dying too, at about the same rate.
LATIN America, only, is rising.
American whites have a lower fertility rate than the French and the Irish.
Latinos, especially immigrants (especially illegal immigrants) are the ones having the multiple children who bring America's birth rate above replacement. Whites are way below replacements, and blacks are a touch below replacement.
LATIN America is reproducing. European America is dying out along with the rest of the white race everywhere in the world.

>> "in Germany, persistent Roman Catholic-inspired anti-choice opposition creates a difficult climate in which to implement sexuality education curricula." <<

I wonder what the WHO says about the sexuality of Nigeria? If the WHO was really concerned about Germany, they'd consider that the nation was going extinct, due to its culture of death, and not fret about the last, few surviving breeders.

"America had slavery, genocide against the Indians, lynch mobs against blacks, and legally-enforced racial segregation until the 1960s"

All of which we confronted, rallied against, and brought to justice. There's a difference between a nation that can correct perturbations from a civil society and those nations that let them diverge into world wars.

Slavery was a legacy of our colonial past. We eliminated it with a great sacrifice of blood and treasure. We addressed segregation and racial strife. Today, America is far more tolerant than Europe when it comes to assimilation of minorities. It is not a matter of throwing stones. Many Europeans came to America to escape religious persecution and oppression.

Genocide is a loaded word. It was never the policy of the USG to eliminate all Indians. It was the policy of Nazi Germany to eliminate all Jews. To compare what happened to the Indians to the Holocaust is an insult to those who died by the millions in the concentration camps. America did not initiate WWI or WWII, which resulted in the deaths of more than 75 million. We did not give the world communism, facism or socialism.

The pledges make liars out of people.

The reason that teenage boys, in the article, have sex later than teenage girls is not male chastity (HA!), it's lack of opportunity. Girls can have sex whenever they want to, but boys? What does a pimply-faced 14 year old have to offer a girl? Not much. They want it - probably more than the girls - but they can't GET it, because the girls are not forthcoming (the girls are hitting it off with the upper-classmen).

So, we can dutifully trot children in and have them say pledges - and even have them MEAN it in all sincerity too - but when the situation presents itself, the offer is made, and the opportunity is there, those pledges get torn to pieces and thrown away. Oh, of course the children SAY that they have honored the pledge. Everyone still lies about sex all the time. (The notion that teenage sex is a "family" matter is ludicrous too. Teenagers do not tell their parents about sex. Quick, go quiz a teenager about masturbation. 100% of teenagers practice that particular "art", and 95% will deny it. Adults can influence children, but the notion that they can really STOP teenagers is, well, as naive now as it was in the days of Romeo and Juliet).

What decisions did you make at 16 didn't you feel foolish about at 40? How do you feel after you have had or caused an abortion? How about herpes?, syphilis?, hepatitis?, AIDS?

Just like we don't allow children to drive too early, or drink alcohol, they should be discouraged from risky behavior at this tender age. More than half of all women have had an abortion today. Ask any one how they feel about it when they are 30. Especially when you consider they caught a disease or caused an abortion with someone they weren't with for 6 months.

It isn't "old fashioned" or "puritan" to want to protect your children. People, for the most part, discourage drug abuse for children, but somehow accept risky sexual behavior as a natural fact.

Wisdom is more than being able to do advanced math.

Some of us would say that sex outside of marriage makes liars out of people; in fact, some of us would say that the act itself is a lie.

Three-quarters of our population growth can be attributed to immigration, legal and illegal. I don't see America in the form of race or ethnic origin. Latin Americans come in all colors and ethnicities. So do many Americans. What race is Tiger Woods? Derek Jeter?

The bottom line is that AMERICA'S population is not on the decline. It is growing, unlike most of Europe. My only concern is assimilating these immigrants so they identify with American. We don't need the Balkanization of the country by race or heritage.

The United States is not dying out. Contrary to an assertion on this thread, the fertility rate of rate of non-Hispanic White, American women is very close to 2.0. It dipped slightly (to 1.88) in 2003 since 2000, but analysis of subgroups suggests it is bound to rise. (Also, I believe that recessions cause declines in birth rates; my guess is the 2006 data will show the rates back up to about 1.95.)
