IRAN and Syria have naively misconstrued the results of the recent mid-term elections to the US Congress. They think President Bush’s administration has become a lame duck in the aftermath of the victory of the Democrats. Syria and Iran believe this will limit the authority and influence of President Bush and the White House and that they have achieved victory in the Middle East, especially in Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine. By their usual superficial understanding of issues, Tehran and Damascus have failed to recognize the identity of Democrats and how they are committed to their duties.

The programmes of Democrats will be a continuation of the internal and foreign policies pursued by Republicans. Besides, the Democrats have better tools, especially their relations with Israel, to implement their policies in the region. Iran, Syria and their followers in Lebanon should stop dancing as what they see is vastly different from what they expect. The US administration will not be weakened in Iraq. The Baker-Hamilton report is old wine, written in a mentality that belongs to the days of Cold War. Tehran and Damascus should stop dancing as their efforts in the region are bound to be fruitless with political doors closed on their faces. Iran and Syria are trying to buy time in the hope that the current circumstances will change.

Who can guarantee future events will be in their favour? Instead of living in illusion we should try hard to see facts. The wind is blowing against Iran and Syria in the region. Even Secretary General of Hezbollah Hassan Nassrallah didn’t sound optimistic about the future of his resistance, which has turned against the Lebanese. With his influence ebbing and after being abandoned by the Lebanese Army, Nassrallah feels he has been trapped. Although he succeeded in gathering people around him Nassrallah has failed to achieve any of his political objectives, the most important of which was to return Lebanon to Syria.

Hezbollah’s weapons will rust in their warehouse as they cannot be used in Lebanon or Israel. The dance party organized by Iran and Syria will do nothing except increasing the loans of Lebanon, which already has dues worth over 43 billion dollars. When Lebanon suffers no one will come to offer condolences to the Lebanese. Is this what Iran, Syria and their follower Nassrallah want to achieve by dancing in the streets of Beirut?

"By their usual superficial understanding of issues, Tehran and Damascus have failed to recognize the identity of Democrats and how they are committed to their duties."

Sure about that, Ahmed?

I know I don't intend to sit back and let the democrats do as they please. I'm still a constituent whether they or I like it and I am harassing them without mercy.

"Tehran and Damascus have failed to recognize the identity of Democrats and how they are committed to their duties."

If Tehran and Damascus have concluded that the Democrats will be primarily focused on taking revenge against the Republicans through investigations, slander, and bad public policy, then Mr. Al-Jarallah is correct.

I was thinking about this a few days ago. I haven't had the pleasure of being on a flight where these ****weeds wanted to have some fun playing with airline passengers. I've decided, when the game is afoot, to grab one and look into the coward's eyes, and say, "You may think your actions are funny, or in service to some cause, but know this--there are those of us who are beginning to tire of it, and are seriously beginning to think about a giant eraser to rid the world of a tasteless cartoon. Now, if you're civil, you'll go back, sit in your seat, and think about your family and how nice it is to be alive. If you're not, I'll be kicked off this flight, but in the meantime you'll have something to remember me by before the plane stops. "
