NEEDHAM, Mass. -- Needham High School has abandoned its long-standing practice of publishing the names of students who make the honor roll in the local newspaper.
Principal Paul Richards said a key reason for stopping the practice is its contribution to students' stress level in "This high expectations-high-achievement culture."
The proposal to stop publishing the honor roll came from a parent. Richards took the issue before the school council, which approved it. Parents were notified of the decision last month. Richards said he received about 60 responses from both parents and students and the feedback has been evenly split for and against.

They should just put everyone on the Honor Roll. Make it really meaningful.
The Onion could have easily published something like this.

Right. Clearly what America needs are lower expectations and lower achievement. Or is it stressing for me to say so?
That's pretty much what they do anyway.. everybody gets their name in the paper even if they are in jail!
You mean person. Your statement stressed me out so much./sarc off
I was tickled pink about 10 years ago, when I faxed an article to Rush (this was pre-internet, as far as I was concerned) about Saugus, CA doing away with Valedictorians - for the same reasons....and he read my little missive, and the article, on the air.
They voted Kennedy. They don't have any honor.
Hah! I thought I was the only one who called it the Glob. Wouldn't buy that paper less'n it was the only thing available. Got to be able to get the fire started these cold mornings that are coming. Maybe. Sometime.

That would be the one with the high drop out rates and low test scores right?
I hope they are going to stop keeping score at school sporting events; they should remove the scoreboards altogether! Instead of letter jackets, the athletes should all get participation ribbons.

It's called the National Education Association aka the teachers union.
Our local HS has an end-of-year awards ceremony just like this. It drags on for hours with awards given for every little thing. Really means a lot when herds of students amble up and back in waves.

Y'wouldn't want to honor greatness. It will upset the slogs.
