How to convince a kid not to do drugs?
December 14, 2006 | self

Posted on 12/14/2006 9:32:26 AM PST by Ben Chad

I have a friend, a single mom, who has a 16-year-old son who has been seduced by a group of peers into smoking marijuana. They live in an upper-middle-class town in New Jersey, a suburb of Philadelphia. The kid says that 90% of his classmates smoke dope. The mom has grounded him, taken away his computer, will not allow him to get his driving permit, tried to reason with him about legal and health consequences, and things like that. But he seems impervious to reason and says he won't stop the behavior.

If the drunk neighbor is a bit much, leave your TV when you are not home on some religious channel where they preach all the time.
Or leave a radio speaker facing his place from another room you are not in.

Help him find religion, or at least a reason to stop annoying you.

Delerium Tremens from Alc actually.
Quite unpleasant.

The guy slapping at coke bugs under his skin was also repeating his own name obssessively.
Would have been amusing if he didn't have violent outbursts.
I was 8 at the time I saw him.

I saw someone barf from pot, and saw someone 'tripping daisies' from LSD.
Not everyone responds to pot the same way, and the sight I described was quite unpleasant.
Funny at first, unpleasant once they passed out.

I think the guy tried to pull his eyes out due to something I did involving those Halloween glow in the dark eyes, and my humor in deciding to give him a bad trip.
(Yes, I do have some culpability in his reaction.)

These were all 'bored upper middle class kids' in Vernon NJ back in the early to mid 80's except for the LSD event, that was early 90's in Orange County NY.

"I knew lots of kids in high school that got stoned on lots of things. Today they're all doctors, lawyers, engineers... and doing just fine".

A lot of them are also college professors and they are not doing "fine" .........they have corrupted and continue to corrupt future generations.

Generally nothing happens to the drug taker until he sticks a knife in someone or kills someone with his car. As the police say, the kids get f$%^ed up and then do something. That's when the police are called. It's probably not just this country with this problem.

Some of it is somewhat funny in the recounting.

Liek the guy slapping coke bugs under his skin.

I know I will probably be "flamed" for this, but here goes my "solution", First, find out who gave or sold them the drugs, if they don't tell have them locked up, if they do and it can be proved sue them or their parents for their rehab, and damage they have caused. Basically I'm saying to make the "pushers" parents responsible and or take away the incentive for these parasites to sell drugs. I know this could be dangerous to the user or their parents, but you must do something.
I suggested this years ago and was told this cannot be done because you are in essence being a criminal (user)
suing a criminal (pusher)

Like Kerouac said. You want to see the real stoners, go down to Times Square, to the bus station at midnight. The kids are barely started on such an illustrious career on alcohol and drugs as any bum down there.

He has found a reason to not damage my car anymore.
He doesn't want a size 9 Redwing steel toe up his rump.
Other than that, he's busy blaming us for his truck being repo'd.

And you know me, I'm not really good at helping people find religion.
Torment and hysteria, yes.
Religion, I'm the last person someone would be able to be helped in that fashion from.

"Remove everything from his room except three pair of jeans, three white shirts, underwear, and the mattress."

... and the door.

I know.
They have these ads about prevention on the local radio.
Problem is, when the parents do try to do prevention, the local authorities tell them they can't 'be harsh' and 'hurt their self esteem'.

The end result is predictable.

Tell him his mom's house could be confiscated if cops ever find dope in it.

Tell him the CIA has been known to spray crops periodically with toxins designed to kill dopers by inducing cancer, emphysema, etc.

Is any of it true? Who cares? The first is true. The second, maybe not. But people in high office have definitely argued that it should be done, so you can never be sure.

He dented my car hood.
State troopers said that isn't enough to warrant their attention.

(NY state troopers Troop F, AKA "F Troop".)

This the same evening his truck was repo'd and he started a fight with his son and went to use a 2x4 on his son's car.
We have no 'local' PD, just state troopers.

If it's Cherry Hill, lots of luck. Many, many obnoxious, privileged brats in that town who do a lot worse than smoke the maryjane.

In any event, maybe a drive to some crack dens and other drug infested areas to impress upon the youth that drug use sometimes leads to bad places in life. Words are cheap - seeing it may be more shocking.

Oh, definitely no door. No closet door either.

No shoes in the closet, even, and no socks in with the underwear, because both of those make good places to hide a baggie.
