Major storm moving into Pacific Northwest
KONP ^

Posted on 12/14/2006 7:43:19 AM PST by djf

Freepers from Oregon, Western Washington, Vancouver island: ALERT!!! Major storm forecast today, and it's not like yesterday was exactly a nice May day either. This could be the biggest of the year. If you have a thermos, make your coffee now! Widespread power outages predicted.

Winds expected to start very high on the coast this afternoon, moving into Puget Sound by the latter part of the evening and continuing very high until mid morning.

Batten down the hatches!

December 14th, 2006 - 6:02am

(Port Angeles) -- It could be a wild weather night for the North Olympic Peninsula. The National Weather Service says another storm is expected to bring very strong winds and rain to the state later today and continuing into tomorrow. Sustained winds of 40 miles per hour or more are forecast for both sides of the Cascades -- and the weather service says gusts could reach 80 or 90 miles per hour on the coast. Meteorologist Jay Albrecht with the Seattle National Weather Service office tells Newsradio 1450 KONP an intense low is expected to form today and move onto the North Olympic Peninsula sometime tonight -- possibly between 8 and 10 o'clock. He says computer models show once the low passes off to the northeast, there will be a very strong westerly surge through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, with 60 to 80 mile an hour winds possible over the water. Albrecht says the area he is worried about the most tonight is the west side of Whidbey Island, but all water-exposed areas could get hammered. Forecasters have a high wind watch in effect for all of Western Washington.

The top 14 feet or so of a Doug fir still is on my shed from a storm three weeks ago. Looks like it broke up on the way down, so it didn't do any damage. Better the shed than the house.

Still a pain in the rear, though.

Oddly enough... I like these storms. (Provided no one gets hurt) There is nothing like the sound of the wind hitting 150 to 200 ft Douglas fir at near 100 miles per hour. What a roar! It is an awesome sight and sound.

They recorded windepeeds on the coast the other day at 91MPH, and this is supposed to be quite a bit worse.

Gimme a couple feet of snow and some icicles any day...

Oh, well. I moved here. I picked my poison!!

Looking at the tides... looks like the dock will be on the beach until about 10pm, but will only barely float. Not a very high tide, 8.5 around 2am then back out. Not great. It'll get beat on by the shore wave, but I think it would be worse if it were higher.

Ha! When did you move here? I'm one of those 3rd generation Northwesterners......so...I remember these from when I was a kid....it has been a while since we've had a good blow like the Columbus Day storm of about 1962....which I remember spending in our basement because of the huge trees around us.

This storm was supposed to hit the Humboldt county coast but has moved north. The crab fleet is still in port because of impossible seas and high surf. The snow level will drop to 1500 feet tomorrow and winds will increase.

We had 100MPH on Jan 1st of this year that raised Cain with highways and power lines. I bought a little generator to get us through a couple of days.

Since 79.

Been in my current house since 91.

Had 3 trees some down during the Inaugeration day storm in 93, since then not much else. Almost all the trees are to the Northeast of the house.

But got about a forty foot Hemlock and a 60 foot doug fir on the w-sw side of the house I worry about a bit.

Here's the good news: Dawn is just now breaking here on Maui. There is hardly a cloud in the sky and temperatures will be in the mid eighties today. (Don't you just hate me) LOL

That would be me :-) My home faces the west and it's windy there on a normal day...

The Hemlock is bad news. It has a shallow root system.

Actually Winter climbing can be much safer and easier than climbing in the summer. If and it's a big if, the weather holds.

Storms in the summer can be really nasty too.
