I hope he recovers - still, while trying not to be ghoulish and tacky, what party is the governor of SD (who would appoint his replacement)?

That is ghoulish and tacky, but I had the same thought.
Prayers for his recovery, and that he'll decide to retire from the Senate.

Reed brought that up. GOP Gov. Could tip the balance back in the Senate. He apologized for speculating.

The governor of South Dakota is Republican Mike Rounds who I'm sure wishes Senator Johnson a full recovery, along with all of us.

Governor Mike Rounds is a Republican. If the senator dies, or has to step down for health reasons, it would give the Senate back to the pachyderms.

Dunno, but can't we at least wish the guy a speedy recovery, and THEN if something happens, ask that question?

No problem. The first thing I did was look for the "R" or "D". Then I wondered who the governor was.
That being said, I hope he doesn't die and recovers quickly.

"If he should be unable to continue to serve, it could halt the scheduled Democratic takeover of the Senate. Democrats won a 51-49 majority in the November election. South Dakota's governor, who would appoint any temporary replacement, is a Republican."
Hmmm. Sorry about his failing health. OTOH it was sickening the way that he first got elected to the Senate.
I like the idea of replacing him with a young, conservative lady, with a family history of longevity.

While the governor of South Dakota is a Republican and could tip the balance in the Senate to a 50-50 tie, don't forget that Senator Thomas of Wyoming, a Republican, is currently undergoing treatment for leukemia. If Thomas has to resign, the governor of Wyoming, a Democrat, would appoint his replacement and that would blow everything wide open.

My in laws are in South Dakota. The governor is a Republican.
Hope Mr. Johnson recovers. He is actually a fairly conservative Dem.

South Dakota has a Republican Governor Rounds. Your question is not tacky it is right on point. While we don't wish bad on Tim Johnson, the Rats only have a one senator majority. It is easier to pray for Johnson if you ask this to be placed in God's capable hands.

As pointed out, he's a Republican. That said, if Johnson is unable to recover (let's hope he does), and he appointed a Republican, you could pretty much kiss the GOP goodbye in South Dakota in the future.
Chances are he would appoint a conservative Democrat - the Governor is a professional politician, and wouldn't ruin his career over this.
Plus, the position would be up for grabs either (depending on which talking head you listen to) within a special election in 90 days, or in the next General Election - 2008. Either election would have the dems fully mobilized if a Republican was appointed.

Republican, I believe. Too bad it's not Kennedy but I wish no one irreperable harm.

I hope he recovers too, but there's nothing ghoulish or tacky about speculating over replacements. No one, or nearly no one (Washington, Lincoln) is indispensable. Politics is warfare by other means and the dems stole the seat he currently occupies from the other current SD Senator, John Thune.
Late reporting precincts from Indian reservations miraculously provided just the margin needed.

He's Republican... which would bring us to a 50/50. And the Pres of the Senate is a Republican too!
