LOL ... I be if the bus had stopped and the door had open and two agents had stepped off the bus, Hector Angel's a$$ would've been seen fleeing in the other direction.

these perps could have been temp workers, not Swift employees

it is the employment agencies responsibility to verify legal working status. They also provide medical insurance in case of job related injury
with an option to co-pay more comprehensive coverage

the company pays the temp agency $10.00 bucks an hour,
the employee makes $6.50 per hour,

Seems Swift could avoid prosecution this way

and if things got too hot for the temp agency, they'll disappear and restart under a new name

"Swift uses a government pilot program to confirm whether Social Security numbers are valid. Company officials have raised questions about the program's ability to detect when two people are using the same number."

... "The 40% figure may have resulted from information the feds either gave to Swift or gave to the court when Swift filed for relief. It doesn't make sense to me that a Swift manager would openly admit that Swift breaks the law in 40% of its hires.

I agree completely Bonaparte. I worked in Human Resources for 30 years, and one never would admit that kind of legal culpability unless the number were given to them by the Feds. Besides which, it looks like Swift officials are the ones who raised the red flag on the use of double Social Security numbers. Swift discovered a flaw in the system that could help the US capture even more illegals in the future!

Most here seem to see "shades of Enron", where I do not. If I were Swift, I would have filed suit to delay this, too, so that I could hire legal workers to take their place. If you own a business of any size, you'd realize too, that losing 40% of your workforce all at once could easily shut you down. I don't know if Swift is publicly held, but if it is, the CEO could easily be fired for "fiscal irresponsibility" if he didn't see that suit was filed! Swift got screwed here worse than anyone -- and it was their own proficiency in questioning whether "the SSN's were being duplicated" that led to this. Swift management ought to get a medal for protecting their country ahead of protecting their company. I, for one, will buy Swift brands wherever I can!

Re "hiring workers at half the wages", there was no allegation of "Swift paying these workers under the table"--and if they had been paid under the table, it would have never led to Swift uncovering this scam. You don't think that these captured illegals & their families wouldn't be screaming their heads off about "Swift's illegal practices", if they had? We should assume that these captured were making at least "minimum wage" unless proven otherwise. But as to the "wages being lower than they'd pay other Americans" -- that's the capitalist system, find workers who will do the job to your satisfaction as cheaply as you legally can -- there is nothing wrong with practice that unless you are a socialist! And if you are, what are you doing on a conservative message board?

In a written statement, President and CEO Sam Rovit said the company has never knowingly hired illegal workers and does not condone the practice.

I guess they won't miss a few criminals being apprehended then...

I thought the constitution was for American "Citizens"

The Constitution is for everyone under the jurisdiction of the United States government, citizen or not.

[Put up tent camps with guards!]

Joe? Is that you? Give em all pink sheets, clothes and underwear and charge em for their meals.

I'm all for it. I understand there is a fence project that we could use some labor for.

I really think we need to change out citizenship laws. The only way you should become a citizen by birth is if one parent is already a citizen (not even a legal greencard holder). If a child is born of a greencard holder they if they are under 18) become citizens automatically when & if the parents do. There should be no thing as anchor babies. Plus make the English language proficiency much harder for citizenship.
