Poll: 7 of 10 Americans Disapprove of Handling of Iraq War (ABC News-WaPo Poll)
The Washington Post ^ | Tuesday, December 12, 2006 | Jon Cohen

Posted on 12/12/2006 7:16:13 AM PST by kristinn

In a new Post-ABC News poll, seven in 10 Americans disapprove of the way the president is handling the situation in Iraq -- the highest percentage since the March 2003 invasion. Six in 10 say the war was not worth fighting.

While both gauges on the war have been negative since late 2004, Bush's approval rating on Iraq has deteriorated further since early October, likely weakened by recent high-profile criticisms of the administration's Iraq policy.

The bleak appraisals of the war include the release last week of the much-anticipated report from the Iraq Study Group, a bipartisan government advisory panel, which described conditions in Iraq as "grave and deteriorating."

In this poll, 36 percent approve of how Bush is handling his job, which is the second lowest percentage in Post-ABC polls since Bush took office in 2001; 62 percent disapprove.

While Bush enjoys significant support among Republicans (77 percent approve), just three in 10 independents, and three in 10 moderates, approve of his job performance. Democrats continue to give an overwhelmingly negative assessment of how Bush is handling his job (86 percent disapprove, 75 percent do so "strongly").

Attitudes about the Iraq war also showed a deep political division. Eighty-one percent of Democrats and 65 percent of independents say the war in Iraq was not worth fighting, while most Republicans -- 69 percent -- say that on balance the war was worth fighting.

Overall, 61 percent of Americans feel the war was not worth fighting. Half of Americans feel "strongly" that the war was not worth fighting, double the number who strongly believe that it was.

This poll was conducted Dec. 7-11 by telephone among a random national sample of 1,005 adults. The results have a three-point margin of sampling error.

I for one don't like how the war in Iraq is being handled.

If it were up to me I would just push the button and then watch the mushroom cloud finally on CNN.

Well, I'm for the war. But I too disapprove of how the war is being fought. The 'political' aspect to it.

We are now fighting units armed, supplied and trained by Iran.

We're at war with Iran, yet we won't admit it.

Yes but don't 8 in 10 Americans want cheaper gasoline and free beer?

The handling of this war, by the White House and Congress, is an absolute disgrace.

I'm with you. It'd be a different story if they included "not aggressive enough -- more flattening of mosques" as an option.

I want a poll that asks: "how much were you influenced to say what you said by our crappy and biased news stories?"

This stuff is amazing. The media report only bad things, then they take a poll about what people have heard them say, then the repeat the poll results and start a new cycle.

And they call it "news."

just three in 10 independents, and three in 10 moderates

What's the difference between an independent and a moderate?

Agree Kristinn. The media is programing America to give up on this War by reporting ALL NEGATIVES.

They told women to abort their babies and that worked. These women never would have murdered their children. Now when Bush is against Roe v Wade they say he's insane. THEY ARE INSANE.

Did someone say "Free Beer"?
I too do not like the way the war is being fought. I want carpet bombing and tanks with frickin' flame throwers rolling through mosques.

I totally agree with fighting the TERRORIST "BUT" I do "NOT" like the way this war is being handled. We are putting out troops in harms way to fight a PC war to appease the media and the far left.

ENOUGH!!!!

Sean Hannity had a very good impromptu interview with troops on the ground in Iraq last night. He is one of the last respectable media figures left. Their observations were insightful. SUPPORT US IN WHAT WE ARE DOING. It will take years to establish a stable government here but they are confident it can be done.

"What's the difference between an independent and a moderate."

Well independent is an actual voter registration designation in some states. In NC we are "unafiliated." "Moderate" could mean anything as it is wholely defined by ABC-WaPo. I'm sure the definitions get molded to fit the agendas of both.
