NEW ORLEANS First came the storm. Then came the workers. Now comes the baby boom.
In the latest twist to the demographic transformation of New Orleans since it was swamped by Hurricane Katrina last year, hundreds of babies are being born to Latino immigrant workers, both legal and illegal, who flocked to the city to toil on its reconstruction.
The throng of babies gurgling in the handful of operational maternity wards here has come as a big surprise and a financial strain to this historically black and white city, which before the hurricane had only a small Latino community and virtually no experience of illegal immigration.

Cheap labor. Good deal for the working people. LOL
UNINTENDED RESULT
New Orleans faces particular challenges:
Limited Medicaid: Nonemergency Medicaid is not available to illegal immigrants or even to legal immigrants who have been in the country less than five years.
Lack of insurance: Virtually none of the immigrant mothers-to-be in New Orleans have private insurance.
Strict delivery policies: Hospitals will deliver these women's babies only if they arrive in labor through the emergency room. There, emergency Medicaid pays for up to a 24-hour hospital stay for a vaginal delivery and a 48-hour stay for a Caesarean section.
If they can lie, steel and cheat us for 5 yrs they get on Fed welfare. Limited Medicaid: Nonemergency Medicaid is not available to illegal immigrants or even to legal immigrants who have been in the country less than five years.
How can it be a "financial strain" when we are assured that illegals bring only good things to us?
I guess it's now a "Light Chocolate" City.
bump
How about "Brown Chocolate"?
There goes the chocolate.
What, only black and white people are supposed to be allowed in New Orleans? As far as I'm concerned, if the Hispanics are hard working individuals who take care of their families, and are an asset to the community, they are welcome to be there! They will certainly be an improvement over some of the former residents who didn't contribute one thing of value to the community.
I bet there hasn't been a big enough illegal hispanic population for these restrictions to be tested in court. Like places like California, Louisianan will be in for a surprise when the courts tell them they have to provide this care and that their restrictions are mysteriously unconstitutional.
Better "milk chocolate".
Chocolate with Almonds.
:^)
The Mole Sauce City?
And don't foreget, because that baby is NOW an American citizen, it is now elegible for every benefit under the sun.
No way would I forget...I handed out those bennies for about 6 years...
Key word: workers. As opposed to the "historically black or white" people who had lived there and either left or don't want to work. Heck, NO should be grateful that anybody is desperate enough to want to go there, and particularly grateful that they actually want to WORK.
New Orleans has long had a fairly good-sized Cuban community (next in size to the So. Florida community?)... but the Cubans and the Mexicans aren't the same group. I remember in high school (in So. Florida), the Cubans and the other Hispanic subgroups didn't mix at all... didn't like each other. Came as a surprise to this gringo...
Heck the mexicans and medican-americans are not the same group here. I have plenty of Americans of mexican ancestry and they despise the illegals. A couple of my friends have their homes on the market and are moving because illegals moved in by them. Their comments are the same as anyones....the neighborhood is turning to crap.
rofl medicans = mexicans
