CA: Droves say goodbye to Golden State
Mercury News ^ | 12/10/06 | Mike Swift

Wayne Brown gave up $40,000 in income to move from the Bay Area to Kansas. And he feels great.

It got to be too much last year for the college information-technology officer: the commute to downtown San Francisco that sometimes took two hours, the housing-price spiral and the high-wire borrowing that paid for it.

``I would find myself sitting in traffic,'' Brown recalled, ``screaming at people.''

When the Kansas job came up in early 2005, Brown and his wife, Teresa, sold two Bay Area homes and happily settled in a suburb of Kansas City. They have never looked back.

The Browns are an example of what demographers say appears to be an unprecedented phenomenon -- even in a good economy, more people are leaving California for other states than are arriving from the rest of the country.

Between 2004 and 2005, the migration flow into California from the other 49 states started flowing the other way. Data from the state Department of Finance shows that, for the first time this decade, more people left California in 2005 for another state than the number who moved in. Mary Heim, a finance department demographer, says this particular kind of outflow will continue for the foreseeable future.

Unlike the tens of thousands who left Silicon Valley following the tech bust earlier this decade, the new migration is about the quest for something besides a job: a better quality of life at a lower cost of living.

--snip--

... California's population of 37 million people is still growing, because of a surplus of births over deaths and because of foreign immigration.

Our City Council is working toward making certain we are NOT a sanctuary city. I suspect because so many of us are California escapees we are sensitive to why we left and don't want to see it repeated here.

Shortly after we moved here from Lincoln, NE in 1964, we spied a beat-out old pickem up truck headin east on I-80 pullin an open U-Haul trailer that looked pretty "low rent!"

You could tell they had everything they owned stacked in that trailer with 4x8 foot sheets of plywood stood on end and a rope wrapped around the whole deal.

Spray painted on the back panel like graphitti was the proclamation... "WE'RE GOIN BACK TO NEBRASKA WHERE THE BULL (BLEEP) IS REAL!!!"

"So are you saying you didn't really want "Conservative" Texas but felt more comfortable with the liberal Texas version of what you were escaping? This is what scares me about the people fleeing California, New York, New Jersey, Mass.. they don't seek us for what we offer but for how they can change us to be more like them and what they left... makes no sense to me."

Nice attempt at playing the sniper. I'm sorry, I'm a single (hetro) male entrepenuer with a lot of money saved, and I've lived everywhere from Colorado to California, Arizona and now Texas.

Let me tell you something about Arizona. I shed my Republican origins BECAUSE of Arizona. I moved to a golf community and thought it would be fun, but the soccer moms in mini-vans / SUVs; the Conservative neandrathals completely changed me.

I'm sick and tired of the Republican snobs who look down on me because I'm not enslaved by some psycho SUV driving aggressor b*tch, and so I now consider myself independent of both parties. AZ cured me by just dealing with the snobery and finding it repulsive. I make 6 figures and my vehicles are paid for, but some soccer mom b*tch is going to look down on me because I'm not her male slave?

Austin women are far more open minded than the Arizona conservative female rattle snakes, and I've learned my lesson.

Whomever is bitter about being inbred and dumb, throw off your chains of stupidity and stop labeling yourselves as 'liberal' or 'conservative' and just start being human.

You'll find there is a lot more to life than tunnel vision, and being entraped in marriage to satisfy some control issue of someone else for the sake of being above a class of people.

Put on your baggie Nixon shorts and go to the beach and stop being such a bunch of whining a$$h*les, and start enjoying life!

Sure, I'm a business owner, for lower tax rates, and abhore liberal communism, but for God's sake; please get your noses out of your a$$*s and just enjoy life.

Back to subject. Any property in Southern California pre-2001 (just before 9-11) could be had for current housing prices in the normal parts of Texas. Buyers were begging for 1500' houses to be bought for $160k in Riverside county. Now that price is doubled, and some fools bought even higher. Make no mistake; there will be a correction! Though it will be painfully slow.. we are on the downward slope of a freakish gain in real estate, and all those hanging on just better either leave or put off the greed factor and get out until the correction completes.

I remember contracting for Lucent at the height of the tech-stock boom, and these fools in upper management were so high on stock gains and cocaine that they had no clue that their stock was going to go from 65/share to where it is now; and I watched it splatter and they all were in disbelief. Many lives were ruined, and thank God in heaven I wasn't being paid in Lucent stock - like the PMs.

The home equity boom has been great for a lot of people. The equity increases have helped many entrepeneurs - including me - BUT, its just all inflation based on an environment of next to nothing interest rates, and California prop-13 stips. It takes 3 years for taxes to catch the average Californian fake-millionaire-wanna-be, and now is just about the time most of them are headed to bail screaming off the equity roller coaster.

Its just a matter of time before the smart opportunists catch the downward trend again and play those Cali fools for all they're worth - like lemmings running over the cliff following the next guy. Trouble is, when you take away wealth from an entitlement mentality, they blame others and attempt vengeance - so I predict riots, mayhem, and complete violent insanity in California once their fake equity is removed from their credit card addictions.

The Texas guy had it right; we don't want them in Texas because they will just screw up the property taxes. As far as taking a swipe at his 'accent' - bro, you sounded totally normal when I read your words, so you're telling me you're a redneck?

Onward to the California riots - its just going to take one little roll downward from the top of the hill to start the entitlers to complain and blame the 'man' for the removal of their equity nipple. Only problem is that you have millions of them addicted, and it aint gonna be pretty.

Good luck Californians! I got the hell out and love life in Austin. At least on the west side of I35 English is the main language!

Cheers!

No way in hell can I hear your accent from reading your sentences. I'm just being truthful about my perception of the culture in north Texas. Where in hell do y'all get those accents?!? WTF? How does this happen? Is it a paralysis of the tongue from genetics or pollution? Seriously, I do not understand it at all. I just could not stand DFW after one night, and knew for a fact I would not fit in without trying to sound like an idiot. I'm sorry for being truthful, but Austin is the only place I've found in Texas where I can speak normally and be respected.

"Austin? Its the San Francisco Of Texas. "

...haha, that's why finding good lookin women is like shooting ducks in a pond, my redneck friend. The women outnumber the men 8:1, and if you're a normal guy, your odds are really good. So, look at it any way you want; I look at the girls, you look at the gay people - so you should take a really really hard look deep inward, get in deep touch with your inner self and ask 'why'? you are finding pits when I'm finding fuzzy, healthy, juicy, southern female peaches in Austin ;)~:::::

"and the cost of housing so high that most people will NEVER be able to purchase a house "

We moved in 2000 from CA to Nevada to avoid state income taxes on a retiree and a neighborhood influx of Mexicans and crime.

We sold our house in Orange County (3br, 1b, 1096 sq.ft., .14 acre lot), bought in 1952 for $12,900, in 2000 for $185K. In NV we bought a house 3X larger on a golf course for $100K more. Our house today is worth more than $500K.

Today I went to www.zillow.com to look up the old homestead. It was sold in April, this year, for $555K. Three bedrooms, one bath, 60 yrs. old !!!

No offense intended, as obviously I wasn't referring to conservatives moving from Calif. to other states, but clearly there is a negative effect of the migration. The fact that the Dems are targeting AZ, NV, and CO indicate that they believe these red states have enough rot in them to swing them into their column.

Not to keep barging in to the discussion (because I normally stay quiet), but there is no difference between Dems and Republicans. They want you to think there is a major difference so you will cut the vote in half so the agenda can enslave us with division and distraction, but honestly only a fool thinks there is a difference.

Once we all stop cheering for one side or the other, we can spot the poverty salesmen from both sides and kick them out of office. All you partisan fools who buy into the 2 party system are completely ignorant of what's really going on.

A united America is the ultimate fear of a power-monger, because they are parasites who need us divided.

You may want to stay in Austin. You would never survive outside the city limits with your attitude.

"You may want to stay in Austin. You would never survive outside the city limits with your attitude."

Texasforever, is that a death threat? You stoop to threaten me because I think the northern Texas accent is phony? Its no wonder that you are completely blinded by partisonship, (and probably have really loud-obnoxious mufflers on your pick-up truck).

Is it a control issue that those who aren't like you are threatened with physical harm? Did your father and other controlling figures in your childhood make you feel small and afraid until you developed the same controlling, threatening, violent habits? I'm so ashamed for whomever made you this way and hope you can see past this external control behavior / mistake before it ruins your life, marriage, relationship with your kids, neighbors, etc.

I accept you for who you were before you were made into this monster who needs to threaten to feel important, and accept you regardless of your ego - until it threatens me - and then I'll just make you out to be the uncontrollable fool that you make yourself out to be.

I've changed my mind. Texas needs to be overrun by Californians so we can soothe the savage beasts into respectable, non-threatening loving individuals.

Texasforever, you need a good dose of your own medicine, and need to be ostracized from society, and your own kind fragmented into slavery for imposing your externally controlled ego onto normal folks who are just trying to get along, without comporting to your own lower existance.

I may speak like a yankee, but I can still kick your redneck butt out of Texas if I get sick of your threats, involve enough legislation to rid this great state of neandrothal threats from small people who have no reason to wear tall boots and threaten others.

Why not put some air in your truck tires and move, before your accent is old hat, and dinosaurs like you are completely extinct?

This is a call to all Californians with incomes to invade Texas and drive this redneck's property taxes so high, he has to move to a more redneck-friendly trailer park! Forget Austin, lets take over Dallas and move these dumb fools back to Arkansas, with bubba, where they belong.

At least property values can increase for a good reason; to drive them out!

Californians are migrating to Nevada, Oregon, and Arizona, and are ruining those states as well.

And worse, MUCH worse, they are moving to Idaho.
