The AK47 fires the 7.62x39, the .308 is 7.62x51.

Besides that you can buy 1000 rds of AK ammo for less than $179 shipped, .308 (7.62x51) runs 3 times that price (unless you handload).

Ruger made a Mini 30, similar to the Mini-14, but in 7.62x39. You can also get complete upper receivers for the AR-15 in 7.62x39.

The tried and true 30-30 (think lever gun) is similar ballistically to the 7.62x39

Absolutely true but I think pretty much any weapon that fires 7.62 x 51 is more fun to shoot!

BTW know any good sources foe 30-06? I'm not sure about CMP as the ammo is mostly foreign and CMP says magnets will stick to it.

As to the 30 not allowed for deer. I always wondered why the 30 carbine and the .223 are 'not humane' to kill a 180 lb deer but fine to kill a 180 lb man.

The ugly but simple truth is a dead deer doesn't require four of it's buddies to remove and treat the wound, feed him and support him till he recovers. Hence a wounded soldier causes his unit to not only lose his effectiveness, but he has to be taken care of as well.

Oh, I know. I love my M-1A (I have a National Match), and I handload so I get some pretty well tuned rounds. Most accurate rifle I own.

However, my SHTF rifle is an AK.

I know that a wounded soldier is worse than a kill but many 'inhumane' weapons have been banned from combat yet under powered weapons are fine even if they are inhumane. Sorta 'catch 22' stuff to me.

can you use a .308 in a rifle chambered for the 7.62x39?

Although the bullet diameter is the same, the .308 is 7.62x51, meaning the case length is 12 mm longer than the Russian round, so it won't fit

This only works to our advantage when the other side takes care of their wounded.

Buddy of mine had a Mini. We both agreed we'd be better off throwing it at the target that trying to shoot it. He dumped it and picked up an AR.

Didn't know that. I thought all M1s were 30-06. Are just the 'National Match' grades .308?

Sometimes they have good deals, you just gotta catch them at the right time. Like I said I pretty much roll my own so I don't pay much attention to the market prices on .308, and I don't have a 30-06 anymore so I don't pay much attention to that at all. Their shipped prices on 7.62x39 is one of the best deals out there right now. There are cheaper prices out there, but shipping 1K rounds can be pretty pricey.

Ammoman includes shipping in their price for large bulk loads.

There's the M1 and the M1A. The M1 is a 30-06 (7.62x63), and the M1A (similar to the M14) is .308 (7.62x51).

True but then we are in the 21 Century, dealing with 7th Century mindsets. And our Judaic-Christian heritage requires us to bind the wounds of our enemies ....

Hmmmm ... maybe I'll get the ACLU to file a suit demanding the end of US medical treatment of wounded combatants.
