One of the questions about Mayor Bloomberg's campaign against guns is whether he is going to end up, in respect of his presidential aspirations for 2008, shooting himself in the foot. The mayor, backed by his corporation counsel and police commissioner, held yesterday another one of his high-caliber press presentations to announce yet a new round of lawsuits against what he represents are "irresponsible" gun dealers. We have way too much respect for the mayor and his police commissioner to dismiss their campaign out of hand. We'd even go so far as to say that we're prepared to see the authorities push for an expansive interpretation of their constitutional mandate if it helps keep down violence against ordinary citizens and against police officers here in the city. But the mayor's credibility is not so high that New Yorkers need to accept everything he says at face value. His gun cases have ended up in the court of a federal judge, Jack Weinstein, in whom it is hard for many New Yorkers, or the gun dealers being attacked here, to repose much confidence in terms of founding principles.*
The mayor is attempting...

*One of our favorite facts about the Second Amendment concerns the objections raised in the House of Representatives when the amendment was debated. An early proposal stated that not only should it say that the "right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed" but that "no person religiously scrupulous shall be compelled to bear arms." That clause was rejected after Congressman Gerry worried that "the people in power" could "declare who are those religiously scrupulous, and prevent them from bearing arms." Which we mention lest anyone get the idea that the Congress was worried about something other than assuring that people could carry.

How does Bloomburg compare to Giuliani on 2nd amendment rights?
Hope he runs as a Democrat.
It might be hard to believe, IMHO, but I say Bloomie's worse.
Gloomberb! Fine name for a POS.
Any Republican Presidential candidates you can think of who are strong on gun rights, strong on illegal immigration control, pro-life, and strong on fighting terrorism "no matter the cost"?
Much, much worse.
IIRC, Duncan Hunter, but he's a relatively unknown U.S. Congressman from California. Some have suggested Mark Sanford, South Carolina's Governor, but he's also relatively unknown.
They're peas in a pod. NYC's Sullivan Law was actually passed by one of the Tammany Hall crime boss/politicians so that his bodygaurds could be armed while those of his enemies couldn't be. It's the original "workplace safety act for criminals". And it's exactly the kind of autocratic eltism which is the hallmark of both Bloomberg and Guiliani.
Bloomy is the poster-boy of what a RINO is. Look up that term and it's his picture next to the text.
If and its a very big IF, he runs for the presidency, he'll do so as a fringer; neither Dem nor GOPer.
God, I hope so. Wouldn't it be fun to have a choice between this yokel and a Democrat?
As soon as his term as mayor is over, he can stop pretending to be in the GOP. I'm sure he goes home and scrubs himself every night to get the GOP stench off of himself. Its probably a running joke at the Upper East Side cocktail parties about him being in the same party as those 'evangelical types'. He mocks the GOP regularly while he pretends that he is clearly in the middle of the party. Yeah, middle of a party but not THIS party. We tend not to have naked guys wearing makeup at OUR parties.
LOL---sometimes things just make me laugh. Thanks for the chuckle.
New York City Outlaws Trans Fats
The New York City Board of Health voted to make the city the nations first to require restaurants to eliminate the artificial trans fats from all of their foods by July 2008. Trans fats are believed to contribute to heart disease by raising bad cholesterol. Restaurant industry representatives called the ban burdensome and unnecessary.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who banned smoking in bars and restaurants during his first term, dismissed cries that New York is crossing a line by trying to legislate diets. When people cannot choose wisely for themselves it is the governments job to choose for them, Bloomberg said. The perils of poor diets have been known and widely publicized for years. But people are still not eating right. This is an intolerable situation. We could not let it stand.
The ban on trans fats wasnt the only action taken. Restaurants will be required to serve a healthy mix of fresh vegetables. Customers who dont eat their vegetables will be fined. We cant put all the responsibility of compliance on the restaurant, Bloomberg said. Individuals must also be held accountable. If they insist on eating poorly it will cost them.
Smoking and eating arent the end of Bloombergs crusade for a healthier city. Many people arent getting enough rest, Bloomberg observed. Theyre staying up late and out late. Theyre too tired to be at their best. This is unhealthy and unsafe.
Bloomberg said hes looking into a plan that would require people working a normal day shift to be home and in bed by no later than midnight on weekdays. Some people lack self-discipline, Bloomberg said. Maybe the City should apply some discipline to them. Besides, midnight is still pretty late. Id call the plan damned lenient if you asked me.
The plan would accommodate those working alternate shifts by issuing color-coded IDs. Those working day shifts would have white cards, swing shift would get gray cards, night shift black cards. Businesses dealing in non-essentials would be required to card patrons to determine if they were up after their mandated bedtime. Exemptions would be granted for the purchase of food and medicine.
A New York Times editorial praised Bloombergs push for a healthier community, but cautioned that there were loopholes in his latest proposal. The new regulations will probably send people home, but whos to say theyll go to sleep? They may watch TV, read, or just fritter away their time. The mayor needs to figure out a way to close this loophole.
Bloomberg acknowledged his plan isnt perfect, but called it a significant step. Sometime after the first of the year well be looking to take this next step, Bloomberg promised. Were going to do whatever it takes to make sure New York City is the best place to live.

LOL!
As to most of the rest, yes, it probably makes him ill to have to be called a GOPer; just as this lifelong Red Socks fan now has to keep claiming to be a Yankees fan does.
Bloomberg isn't even worthy of the term RINO, party-jumping opportunist maybe.
I rather hope his aim is a bit higher. Say just under half way between his foot and his head.
He's part of the new castrati.
