A 22-year-old Rockford man has been charged with plotting to set off hand grenades in an alleged terror attack at a popular Rockford mall during the busy holiday season, federal authorities announced today.
Derrick Shareef, of Rockford, has been charged with attempting to maliciously damage and destroy a building and to use a weapon of mass destruction against persons or property in the U.S., federal authorities said.
According to an FBI affidavit, Shareef met with an undercover federal agent in a Rockford area parking lot to trade stereo speakers for a handgun and four hand grenades that he intended to use at the CherryVale shopping mall at 7200 Harrison Ave., just off the junction of Interstate Highways 90 and 39 in the city.
The mall, with about 130 retail stores, was one of several potential targets, which also included courthouses, city hall and several government buildings, the complaint alleges. Sources said there was no imminent threat from the attack, describing it as more of a hopeful plan.
Shareef also allegedly told an acquaintance who actually was cooperating with the FBI that he wanted to commit acts of "violent jihad" against civilians.
Shareef told an undercover informant that he wanted to attack a courthouse in DeKalb County and "smoke a judge," according to the complaint.
"[T]he courthouse in DeKalb where I be going every month You go in there and you clock the first three [guards] at the door that they got, and you up in there, you know what I'm saying I just want to smoke a judge," the complaint quoted Shareef as saying.
The informant then asked Shareef when he wanted to stage the attack.
"What do you think? I like the holiday season," the complaint quotes him as saying.
That appears to be correct.
Wouldn't it be interesting if the FBI started releasing these guys' voting records when they're charged?
from MSNBC: "The FBI has been aware of the plot and has been monitoring him closely... The plan was allegedly ideologically motivated. No other details were released, but authorities said the arrest eliminated the risk of the attack being carried out." (FWIW).
Shopping malls present a great target for terrorist activity especially during shopping seasons. What has happened in the Chicago area is something that is being observed and studied by the ROP.
Years ago I adviced my friends: (1) To visit malls only during low shopping activity and stay away from them during weekends. (2) Stay a safe distance away from ROP men and women who wear burka-like clothing. Ask the Israelis, they may go booom!!
I foresee having to undergo security checks at malls and other places where people gather in great numbers, similar to what we experience at airports. Welcome to reality.
Suspect Arrested In Alleged Chicago Terror Plot
Law Enforcement Officials: Plot Involved Attack In Chicago(CBS) CHICAGO A suspect has been arrested in an alleged terror plot that involves a Chicago target, sources tell CBS 2.
As CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery reports from outside the courtroom of U.S. Magistrate Judge Maria Valdez, a source tells CBS 2 that a suspect was arrested in a case with national security implications.
Law enforcement officials say the man was a U.S. citizen, and planned to commit some sort of terrorist attack in Chicago. The man had "ideas and desires, but no means," law enforcement sources said.
A source said earlier that the alleged plot might have involved a shopping mall, but later information did not specify what the target was.
Law enforcement officials added that the alleged plot was not on the level of 9/11, and even "three rungs below" the recent Miami plot that was disrupted. That plot involved alleged plans to blow up Chicago's Sears Tower.
The man arrestred Friday is considered a lone operator without ties to any known terrorist organization, law enforcement sources said.
He has an appearance in Chicago's federal court at 11:45 a.m.
The U.S. Attorney's office said a written statement and comments from U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald and FBI special-agent-in-charge Robert Grant will soon be provided.
Not according to King Richie II.
All all the people in it probabaly had no idea what their work was eventually leading to other than death.
A lone operator involved in a plot? How did they track him? Was he communicating with himself?
I thought of that, too. LOL. I DO like Rockford.
They've now changed the story to the "lone wolf" angle.
Patrick Fitgerald's in charge. Well, at least it'll get done right... /s
Amish, no doubt. It's all that violent lone-wolf Amish ideology.
Bi-polar?
Voted for him twice probably.
Enough is enough.. The Amish need to be stopped, now.. We need to stop using our air filled tires and denounce Israel or they will strike again..
But I followed the link, and the 'who has been linked to Al Qaeda' statement was not on the ABC affiliate webpage.
Hmmmm. . .
