A 22-year-old Rockford man has been charged with plotting to set off hand grenades in an alleged terror attack at a popular Rockford mall during the busy holiday season, federal authorities announced today.
Derrick Shareef, of Rockford, has been charged with attempting to maliciously damage and destroy a building and to use a weapon of mass destruction against persons or property in the U.S., federal authorities said.
According to an FBI affidavit, Shareef met with an undercover federal agent in a Rockford area parking lot to trade stereo speakers for a handgun and four hand grenades that he intended to use at the CherryVale shopping mall at 7200 Harrison Ave., just off the junction of Interstate Highways 90 and 39 in the city.
The mall, with about 130 retail stores, was one of several potential targets, which also included courthouses, city hall and several government buildings, the complaint alleges. Sources said there was no imminent threat from the attack, describing it as more of a hopeful plan.
Shareef also allegedly told an acquaintance who actually was cooperating with the FBI that he wanted to commit acts of "violent jihad" against civilians.
Shareef told an undercover informant that he wanted to attack a courthouse in DeKalb County and "smoke a judge," according to the complaint.
"[T]he courthouse in DeKalb where I be going every month …You go in there and you clock the first three [guards] at the door that they got, and you up in there, you know what I'm saying…I just want to smoke a judge," the complaint quoted Shareef as saying.
The informant then asked Shareef when he wanted to stage the attack.
"What do you think? I like the holiday season," the complaint quotes him as saying.

I live in Rockford and Friday was a shocker/wakeup call here. Islamic terrorism in it's various mass-murdering forms can clearly strike anywhere. We must remain diligent against attack from Islamic nuts. Specifically, I want to know where this NoI/RoP fanatic attended Mosque and what role that played in convincing him mass-murdering innocent shoppers was a good idea.
The mall that this Shareef dirtbag was planning to attack is no stranger to nutters acting out.

On a serious note, he then mentioned taking out the guards
and going for it in a courthouse. Seems it would be easy
enough to see if he'd had a little bad blood (so to speak)
with the judicial system lately while ruling one way or
another on links to terrorist cells.
On another note, with the planned mall explosion, the FIRST
thing they should have checked into was whether or not
a store in that mall had planned another of those crazy
limited supply one hour sale on Playstations. People have
been trampled over them, he may be more of a direct sort
of shopper.
Gotcha... yes, I know the area roughly, I take, I think...88 to 39 up there, but I always thought Quad Cities was closer, never had to travel that far west by auto...anyways, sorry, didn't know Rockford was his hometown, I heard Chicago and figured he maybe moved out a bit from the city to avoid getting caught. I mainly work in Hinsdale, where not to long ago a similar situation happened where a guy tried to blow up a bomb in our train station. I never had a chance to read about it, don't know if it actually exploded, but no injuries. We have, however, received repeated threats to our PD that another bomb will detonate there shortly. We received a letter from local police, alerting the residents and store owners to keep an eye out for suspicious characters or odd-looking packages. Great, now I get to look over my shoulder every time I walk around town.
When you get to that junction of I-39 and I-88, we're right there; Rochelle, IL. When you turn North on I-39, the first exit (within 1 1/2 miles) is State Route 38 which is Roosevelt Rd in Chicago. And yes, the Quad Cities are aways out there. It takes us a good 1 3/4 hours to get to our relatives in Rock Island. We're going again for Christmas. I'm originally from Oak Park.
I recall that bomb thing in Hinsdale, but didn't know there were ongoing threats. That's bad. No one wants to live under a cloud like that. As I posted earlier on this thread, we had our school bomb scare here in October, but haven't heard a word about it since. I think it was the timing of this perp's stuff in Rockford that made me wonder whether he was involved in our scare.
perhaps the war in iraq and afghan are keeping these scum quite BUSY these days. ANOTHER reason for 'staying the course'!

I have to admit it but I was getting pretty fed up with Grossman last week. Granted he wasn't getting terrific protection but he made some pretty awful decisions.
It's almost as if he feels if he gets the ball in the general area of his receiver they will outfight the defender and catch it.
Personally if he has a bad game Monday night I may jump on the Griese bandwagon.

Reminds me of a band...."Rage Against the Machine". That was a title of one of their songs. Their lyrics were politically motivated, pleading with people to act and act now before it's too late. In my opinion, somewhat ahead of their time, their lyrics apply now more than ever. These songs were written in the early 90's. Here's a link to their lyrics.
