A 22-year-old Rockford man has been charged with plotting to set off hand grenades in an alleged terror attack at a popular Rockford mall during the busy holiday season, federal authorities announced today.
Derrick Shareef, of Rockford, has been charged with attempting to maliciously damage and destroy a building and to use a weapon of mass destruction against persons or property in the U.S., federal authorities said.
According to an FBI affidavit, Shareef met with an undercover federal agent in a Rockford area parking lot to trade stereo speakers for a handgun and four hand grenades that he intended to use at the CherryVale shopping mall at 7200 Harrison Ave., just off the junction of Interstate Highways 90 and 39 in the city.
The mall, with about 130 retail stores, was one of several potential targets, which also included courthouses, city hall and several government buildings, the complaint alleges. Sources said there was no imminent threat from the attack, describing it as more of a hopeful plan.
Shareef also allegedly told an acquaintance who actually was cooperating with the FBI that he wanted to commit acts of "violent jihad" against civilians.
Shareef told an undercover informant that he wanted to attack a courthouse in DeKalb County and "smoke a judge," according to the complaint.
"[T]he courthouse in DeKalb where I be going every month You go in there and you clock the first three [guards] at the door that they got, and you up in there, you know what I'm saying I just want to smoke a judge," the complaint quoted Shareef as saying.
The informant then asked Shareef when he wanted to stage the attack.
"What do you think? I like the holiday season," the complaint quotes him as saying.
I keep thinking to myself that if enough of these perps full names and home addresses were made public, alot of these tough guys would crawl back underneath their rock and stay there
Ahead of their time, as usual. Couldn't stand their (left-wing) politics, but loved the music. Saw them live at Kent State University - one of the best concerts I ever attended.
Drudge has his full name up now: Talib Abu Salam Ibn Shareef
Definitely Southern Baptist.
I wonder if this guy voted for Senator Barak Hussein Osbama?
Thanks! That clears up the material steps requirement (and a nice Federal firearms enhancement to boot).
Now we still wonder how the JTTF got wind of him in the first place.
He will be a popular addition to the USP Marion population, I'm sure. Of course, we in the Keystone state would be pleased to host him at USP Lewisburg as well.
Alas, the glory hounds at USP Florence ADMAX will probably get him. They are like the NY Yankees of prisons - they get all the stars!
I be darned!
Anyone see if he has a myspace page?
" ... "[T]he courthouse in DeKalb where I be going every month
..."
Definitely a foreigner who hasn't learned English yet.
Are you sure it's not "Rock the Catbox"?
By order of the prophet
We ban that boogie sound
Degenerate the faithful
With that crazy Casbah sound
But the Bedouin they brought out
The electric camel drum
The local guitar picker
Got his guitar picking thumb
As soon as the shareef
Had cleared the square
They began to wail
[Chorus]
Now over at the temple
Oh! They really pack 'em in
The in crowd say it's cool
To dig this chanting thing
But as the wind changed direction
The temple band took five
The crowd caught a wiff
Of that crazy Casbah jive
[Chorus]
google finding ... (we can assume it's a different Talib, another is an imam)
" ... Because of a common reluctance to publicly state their religion, Air Force Master Sgt. Talib Shareef, president of the recently formed Muslim American Military Association (MAMA), estimates that there may be as many as 10,000 Muslims in the armed forces. ..."
"There was a radio-mounted bomb in the luggage of 800." Mighta been one, I suppose, but it damned sure didn't go off.
"...there had been several airliners blown out of the sky by shoe bombs. Like TWA 800." To quote the late Groucho, "That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard."
With my attitude about our current government, I would be SERIOUSLY dangerous if I were a muslim. Don't get me wrong, as with this lad, the danger may have been primarily to myself.
Islam is, literally, a license to kill when things aren't going your way and you are controlled by "the man". It is one of the reasons it is very popular in our prison system.
And maximal use of pig fat on the bullets...
Only by the MSM! No self-respecting downstater would consider Rockford a suburb of Chicago! :-) There are a LOT of cornfields between Chicago and Rockford!
Fox just had a portion of the presser on. He took steps to purify himself and began creating a video in case he didn't survive.
Moved to Rockford when I was 4. Attended Guilford HS. CherryVale is the mall where my mom shops.
Another Nordic terrorist, no?
I's suggest requiring all Moslems in America to take a specific loyalty oath and renounce any jihad or violence, but then I know the Koran encouranges Moslems to lie to infidels. Sigh.
Seems to me we're coming to the point that we assume all moslems are terrorists unless they take positive steps to demonstrate their loyalty, and even then you can't trust them, not when the Koran encourages deception to nonbelievers for tactical advantage.
Freedom of religion is important, but the first Amendment prohibits only the establishment of religion, not the banning of groups that preach the overthrow of the Constitution. Hmmmmm......
