Rudy's A Down-Hil Racer In Prez Poll (Marist Poll)
NY Daily News ^ | 12/08/06

Posted on 12/08/2006 5:19:56 AM PST by areafiftyone

Hillary may have the buzz, but Rudy has the better poll numbers - at least for now.

A new WNBC/Marist College survey yesterday found that while Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) is the most popular presidential option among Democrats, a whopping 47% of all voters say they would "definitely not" vote for the former First Lady if she runs for President in 2008.

By contrast, a full two-thirds of voters say they remain open to voting for former Mayor Rudy Giuliani - who would best Clinton, 49% to 43%, if the 2008 race were held today.

The numbers suggest that the Republican Giuliani - whose pre-9/11 record remains a blank to most voters - has room to grow, while Clinton begins with nearly half the electorate aligned against her, experts said.

"The bottom line is that there is very little room for error in a Hillary-for-President campaign," says Marist College pollster Lee Miringoff.

Not that Giuliani is without challenges.

The poll found that while Giuliani remains the top pick among GOP voters, a full 47% of those voters - when told that Giuliani is pro-choice, pro-gun control and pro-gay rights - say such issues could be a "major factor" in their eventual decision.

Aides to Giuliani declined to comment on the numbers, but Clinton pollster Mark Penn argued that Clinton has consistently proven she can expand her base of supporters.

"When she started in New York, many people said they'd never vote for her - and she just won reelection with 67% of the electorate," said Penn.

You and some of your pals admitted we lost in 2006 because the social conservatives stayed home. Since we cannot count on you and others, then we need to start putting other coalitions together.

A social conservative will NEVER be elected President no matter how much you want to stomp your feet, whine, and threaten to leave the Republican Party (which I am beginning to have my doubts about your efforts for the GOP) because the 'my way or no way' social issue crowd has alienated a large portion of Republicans not to mention Indy's that we need to win elections.

If you were involved in local politics, you would know we are outnumbered sometimes in large numbers of Dems over the GOP and you don't win as a one issue candidate in a national race because you have to attract Indy's to win. If we listened to you guys, we would be in the permanent minority. Go look at the Contract with America and you will see that social issues were not a #1 priority. Whoever got you folks believing that it was a #1 priority in 1994 could sell swamp land in Arizona. We elected fiscal conservatives in 1994 that also happened to be some social conservatives but they ran on a platform of less taxes, smaller government, ethics, accountability etc.

Conservative does not mean only 'social' conservative as much of some of you keep pushing that button.

You can post of that nonsense about Giuliani being a conservative. Pack of lies.

Conservatives do not support big government. Rudy is for big government. Conservatives DO NOT support abortion on demand. Rudy supports abortion on demand. Conservatives DO NOT oppose a ban on partial birth abortion. Rudy opposes a ban on partial birth abortion. Conservatives DO NOT support gun control. Rudy supports gun control. Conservatives DO NOT support an assault weapons ban. Rudy supports an assault weapons ban. Conservatives DO NOT support special rights for homos or illegal aliens. Rudy supports special rights for homos and illegal aliens.

Stop mudding up the political waters with these attempts to make Giuliani into something he IS NOT. Rudy is a liberal. Rudy is NO conservative. This constant fabrication of Giuliani as some kind of right-winger, is an effort in absurdity.

Without that security our rights and beliefs are going to go the way of the buggy whip.

Exactly! I like the way you phrased that too!

Sometimes teh difference between teh lessor of 2 evils is so scant it does not really matter who wins. That is what I think of the differnece between Hitlery and Rino Rudy. If Rino Rudy gets the nod I can not and will not vote for him.

I think you are correct. However, if Hillary chooses Richardson as her VP candidate, I think our only chance is Rudy. Throwing Richardson, and the voters he likely brings with him, would totally change the equation and you know if we know this, the Clinton's know it.

In this case they'd have their own Ross Perot right there on their own ticket and draw off a lot of the Hispanic Voters who might vote GOP instead.

That's the point - we don't have much from which to choose. Who do want? "Macaca" Allen? Newt "Deliver the divorce subpoena to my wife in the recovery room" Gingrich? Both of them are damaged goods. I defy you to name a conservative candidate that will be ready to run for the Presidency in 2008.

Rudy is unacceptable to me, save only that he might be the only candidate willing to fight the War on Terror to victory. I'll forgive an awful lot for somebody who will ditch all the stupid restrictions we're fighting under and WIN!

I agree and why I think Rudy is the one candidate we have that can win. I cannot stand the thought of Ms. Clinton and slick back in the WH.

To me it does. If you want my vote you have to be at least somewhat a social conservative. If you are a flaming liberal like Rino Rudy you will never garner my support.

Yes. Remember after 911 when [Guiliani] told the Saudi Shiek to take his ten million dollar donation and put it where the sun doesn't shine...

I agree. If you're a fiscal conservative and a social liberal, that by definition makes you, a libertarian, NOT a conservative in the traditional sense. Not a Reagan conservative. Rudy`s governing record of NYCity marks him as a liberal, right down to his core values and beliefs. There is no other political category that Giuliani fits into. None. Rudy remains a liberal, and sadly a Republican.

Neither can I. IMO the people threatening to jump ship and vote third party are too young to really appreciate what happened in 1991 or too niave to understand what happens is Hillary wins. We have to beat this woman at all odds and IMO we could do a lot worse than Rudy, he could well be exactly the right man and I think a lot of Conservative Democrats would vote for him over Hillary.

What part of social conservatism are you willing to bend on? Sounds like none.

Out of curiosity, how many "small l" libertarians would you like to leave the party?

If I recall correctly, Reagan Man, the Gipper advocated a Big Tent---not ideological purity.

George Bush wasn't much of a fiscal conservative either.

I will not bend on guns or abortion. The others I am willing to give a little if I get a little. But as for the two I will not budge on are in opposition to Rino Rudy's positions I can never vote for him.

The it's a good thing that Giuliani has voiced strong support for judges who agree with you.
