Lab Carries His Own Leash During Walks (gets around city ordinance)
KNBC V NEWS ^ | 12-6-2006

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- A city ordinance in Sioux City, Iowa, says all pets must be on a leash -- but it doesn't say who has to be carrying the leash.

One Iowa dog, Jack, has been walking himself since he was a puppy.

The 11-year-old Labrador retriever holds his own leash in his mouth as he walks with his owner, Brad Ralph.

"So far, we haven't been cited," Ralph said. "I don't know how that would hold up in court, but he is technically on a leash."

Jack and Brad walk about three miles each day.

"I don't really do it to get attention you know," said Jack's owner, Brad Ralph. "It's just handy and he's a little bit of a show off and likes to prance around with his leash in his mouth."

Jack takes his responsibility very seriously. He doesn't like it when someone tries to take his leash away from him.

This will give all those scummy pit bull and Rottenweiler owners an excuse to do the same thing.

"See my #38 and also #18."

I would also direct freepers to your tagline, which is excellent.

My chihuahua Fidel likes to carry very tiny stuffed animals around every waking hour. His sidekick Charo does not have the same habit.

My bulldog always carries her own leash when we go out

My puggle loves to carry "her" end of the leash.

They did some testing in Sioux City (my home town) and found the dog had a higher IQ (by 4 points) than the average resident.

I'm sorry to be such a stick in the mud, but I truly believe a dog is safer when being walked on a leash.

You aren't a stick in the mud - you are a responsible dog owner. I love my dog too much to let her walk herself. She carries her end of the leash in her mouth - but I'm attached to the other end.

Here in NYC, we've been fighting a proposed change to the "off leash Hours" in City parks. As of now, dogs can be off leash from 9PM until Close, and then from opening until 9AM. Where we live, there are probably 2 dozen dogs all running around together from about 7AM until 9 every weekend morning. Rain or shine, hot or cold, we bring water for the dogs and coffee & doughnuts for the humans. Everyone is well-behaved, too. A little squirrel chasing, a little humping, but the dogs are better off for it- They're happier and more socailized than if they were on-leash, struggling to get at one another.

We have every kind of dog imaginable- A lot of mutts from North Shore Animal League, some purebreeds too. Size varies, tto. We have mini Schnauzers, Yorkies, A Doberman, A couple of Pit mixes, a Rottweiler, and of course, Rocky, the "Great American Rock Hound"! (He's Mine.) We have no idea what he is, other than Yellow Lab, and whatever jumped the fence...

This must be a very slow news day.

Chihuahuas are as much descendants of the majestic wolf as other larger, more ungainly breeds...Actually, there's an article somewhere on FR about a service dog breeder in the UK who chose to mate a male chihuahua with a small female lab.He had a reason for this, but I forget precisely what it was, besides wanting a smaller service dog than a typical lab. A veterinarian who disagreed with his reasons was quoted as saying, "I'm surprised they didn't lose the chihuahua."

Most unnerving was the parents that would just allow their kids to run over to her and hug on her! I would end up struggling to pull my dog away and begging the parent to restrain their child!

My daughter loves dogs. But she has been taught since she was a pup to always ask the owner first if she can approach a dog. It's just common courtesy and common sense.

Our kitty carries her leash - or one end of it - when she and my hubby go outdoors.

"In a Lab, I think there's still quite a bit of puppy until their last days."

My first lab lived for 17 years and had some puppy in her till the very end. My second lab was completely calm by her second year and seems to live to guard me or anything she believes belongs to me.

Believe I will have to see if she will hold her own leash.

We grew up with a golden named Nanny would carry ANYthing. She loved to bring us stuff from the backyard whenever we let her out.

On one memorable occasion, when Dad was building a brick floor for Mom's gazebo, Nanny brought us half a brick.

On another even more memorable one, Nanny brought us Irs*, our retarded cat. We couldn't believe Irs let her do that.

*Pronounced Iris, but spelled Irs because we found her on April 15.

This must be a very slow news day.

Depends on where you live. In Annapolis, where I live, I think the two great themes of our local newspaper are "crabs and labs."

I think Goldens and Labs are almost identical except for the shedding part. We got a Lab thinking that because their hair is shorter they wouldn't shed all that much.

I'm still paying for my not doing research on that one! I've never seen a dog shed like a Lab does.
