New York on Tuesday became the first city in the nation to ban artery-clogging trans fats at restaurants, leading the charge to limit consumption of an ingredient linked to heart disease and used in everything from french fries to pizza dough to pancake mix.

In a city where eating out is a major form of activity _ either for fun or out of hectic necessity _ many New Yorkers were all for the ban, saying that health concerns were more important than fears of Big Brother supervising their stomachs.

When will the ban be extended to animal fat like lard, suet, butter, etc.?

By thunderous applause, and aby population too dumb to decide for themselves which items to choose from a restaurant menu, or which is the better choice of restaurants.

Every sentence in that article is quotable. New Yorkers deserve the government they have, but unfortunately this is going to spill over.

The bribes will always be bigger in the illegal drug trade than from the transfat speakeasies.

"In a city where eating out is a major form of activity..."

I was once told, while on an airplane, that all Texans know how to do is "Dinner and moviie." Besides not being true, it appears to be a pot and kettle situation...

But more on topic: I'll be the judge of what goes in my digestive tract, thank you. And if you exercise a little, and don't eat out every single meal of your life, you'll probably be OK.

No arguing about where to eat is a major activity.

Amazing. You could see these coming from a million miles away, but I'm still amazed. Look for San Francisco or some small whack job town in Vermont or something to ban meat.

There is no whacky, hippie, new-age proposal that I or you can come up with as a JOKE that will be too far out to be passed as a law.

This will be my chance to be an outlaw, smuggling steaks across state lines, one step ahead of the green police, life in the fast lane, all that good stuff.

This is as stupid/funny as those New York polls that said something like 80% of people talk on their cell phones while driving, and 70% thought driving while talking on a cell phone should be banned.

Great angle, shots... "freedom of expression." Will this apply to Food Network? I can see it now, Lagasse, Batali, Flay et al vs. Peoples Republic of NYC.
