Report: Lufthansa plans big 747 order Tuesday December 5, 1:38 pm ET
German airline Lufthansa AG plans to order at least 20 of Boeing's new 747-8 jumbo airplanes and take options for 20 additional planes, according to a report on the Wall Street Journal Web site. The online report said the 20 firm orders, valued at $5 billion at list prices, came at the expense of Chicago-based Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA - News) rival Airbus and its competing A380 jumbo aircraft.
Boeing has received orders for its new 747-8 freighter model but the Lufthansa order would be the first order for the passenger version of the plane, which is larger and more fuel efficient than the current 747-400 model. The plane, which will be built in Everett, is expected to enter service in 2010.
The Journal added that something could happen at the last minute to delay the deal, which is expected to be announced Wednesday.

A friend referred to them as Luftwaffe on one flight, Flt Attendants were NOT amused LOL
ANd after the beancounters are done...?
I did that once, many years ago...
That's looks like an interesting incident there.
What happened?
D
I might be willing to buy a ticket someday.
I am thrilled for Boeing but have to wonder: they are getting so many orders, when will they reach production capacity?
Seems like nothing more than a ploy to me...
...in order to get some concessions from the other Eurowheenies when it comes to German labor manufacturing the Airbust.
But did he mention the war?

They have told Southwest Airlines that they cannot fill their order for the latest 737s at this time.
Looks to me like an incident in Sept 2005 in which an A320 had a nose-gear malfunction and landed in LA with the nosegear turned 90 degrees to the line of flight.
Hey...I worked with a German Lady who'd fly them back to Der Faderland annually; I'd kid her about it being "Luftwaffe" - she said she used the term on some ensuing flights and got laughs ... of course, she was "from the tribe".
I'm on the flipside...I haven't travelled a whole bunch, but as circumstances would have it a whoooole lot of my airplane time has been on 747's - going back to when they used to fly L.A. to Chicago, with the disco and piano bar up in the pod.
I love 'em!!
Look at you, you should stop drinking the 'spresso; its seeped all the way out your pores for crying out loud. And look at you walking down the aisle. Man.
What you saying? Is Paleo tying the knot and leaving most of us broken hearted? !!! Just kidding. My best to you!
Before the salesman says that, he says he has to run the deal past his manager first.
Some perspective - 20 747s is over a years backlog of that Jumbo airplanes. That is huge. The 747 is alive and well.
Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus,
