Good news. Pretty high moon tides the last couple days.

At first it was reported that it was a no go, then suddenly it popped up and began to move.
Hope it's a successful move.

"Hope it's a successful move."
Given its history, I doubt this move will cause it any real problems. :o)

I work across the street from Battery Park, and a bunch of us watched her go by about a half-hour ago. She's almost to Liberty Island by now.
Inspiring. Can't wait for her to return.

A month after a failed attempt to move the USS Intrepid, the historic aircraft carrier was freed Tuesday from the Hudson River anchorage where it had sat for nearly a quarter of a century.
"This old baby is moving," a joyous Intrepid Foundation President Bill White said aboard the vessel.
Some crew members cried and gave each other high-fives and hugs. Onlookers ashore cheered.
In the previous attempt, thick mud had proved too strong for six "tractor tugs" exerting some 30,000 horsepower.

The aircraft carrier-turned-museum is to be towed, still backward, down the river toward New York Harbor for a five-mile trip to a shipyard in Bayonne, New Jersey, where it will undergo renovations.

Another former crewman, 81-year-old Felix Novelli, said he was confident the morning's move would go smoothly.
"The whole empire of Japan couldn't stop her. What makes you think a little mud will stand in her way?" Novelli said.

So they got it moved. Amazing stuff, mud, how it collects around anything that impedes the flow of water.

It's a lot of mud, but Mother Nature has a brazillion times more going right by every day just waiting for another obstruction to appear so it can be buried. I remember a long time ago walking past the skyscrapers to the end of the street and there was an ocean liner right there. You could stand under the bow to get out of the rain. That felt like it was even bigger and more impressive than most of the buildings in Manhattan, and it moves!

I've been following the Intrepid's plight for a bit now. Years ago when Intrepid moored on the Hudson and opened as Navy museum, Navy vets from WWII were invited to come down and lend a hand making her shipshape. My late father went; he was a career MMC "Tin Can" sailor and had a grand time hanging out with the other old salts who volunteered for duty.
They didn't do much, worked the brightwork, the weaves and fancy work and sat around entertaining tourists by swapping sea stories and 'damn lies'. All of this done with a mug of coffee in hand, held the proper way of Navy Chiefs......finger through the loop and thumb over the lip in the coffee.

My oldest son did his HS Senior Project on Naval Air Power in WWII. He spent many hours refurbishing Sick Bay on the USS Hornet.

BZ to your son!
Did ya catch the coffee mug thing? My father was a Machinist Mate Chief and treated me to French fries cooked in black oil on visiting days.
I suppose now they just 'nuke 'em'.
