Mr. Bolton Resigns (According to the NYT)
New York Times ^ | 5 December 2006 | Pinch?

Posted on 12/05/2006 4:30:37 AM PST by shrinkermd

John Bolton’s decision to resign as America’s envoy to the United Nations was a wise move. He averted a distracting and divisive fight at a time when both Congress and the Bush administration have better things to do. He has also provided President Bush with an opportunity to show the kind of bipartisan leadership he talks about so frequently and exercises so seldom.

This page opposed Mr. Bolton’s nomination in the first place, arguing that at the very minimum, an ambassador to the United Nations should be someone who believed the organization deserved to exist. Mr. Bolton has always been hostile to the U.N., and to the whole spirit of consensus-seeking diplomacy it embodies. When Democrats and moderate Republicans kept the nomination tied up in the Senate, Mr. Bush characteristically insisted on having his own way by giving Mr. Bolton an interim appointment while Congress was out of session.

Did he really resign? I also heard the Senate would not consider his nomination. Further the this nomination failed because of a handful of committed UN devotees. Where is the truth?

I read that the president was ready to give him another recess appointment but he refused to go that route and, instead, resigned.

Apparently, this story is being carried by some of the papers (Boston Globe for one), but I don't see it on CNN or Fox.

If true, a dadburn shame. Now, let's make some effort to throw the UN out of the U.S.

I don't think Bolton ever believd the u.n. should not exist.

John Bolton, simply wanted the organization to actually act responsibly, police itself and not run the beauracracy simply for their personal gain.

Mr Bolton, is everything the original intent of the organization was to embody.

It's a damned huge loss for us and the world.

"Linc" sure did:

Quoting from the Times:

"Attempts to get the lame duck Senate to confirm Mr. Bolton ran aground when Lincoln Chafee, the Republican senator from Rhode Island, refused to support the nomination in the Foreign Relations Committee, leaving Mr. Bolton’s fate hung up on a tie vote."

Mr. Bolton has always been hostile to the U.N.,

The Times has always been vocally hostile to the Bush Administration.

This stinks. I did enjoy watching him on TV hammering all the Euro-turds at the UN

This is too much. The left wants it to be seen as forcing the resignation of Mr. Bolton because of the elections. In reality his term is over at the end of the year, which is when he is resigning. The President could do another recess appointment for him but he could only continue without salary. The dems and rinos would not let his nomination come to the floor for a vote, which he would win with a simple majority.

So, Congress joins the ranks of alQaeda, Hezbollah, Hamas, Communism, Ahmadinajad, Syria and North Korea as enemies of mankind. Congratulations, all you political pigs! Nice going!

Thanks. Missed radio and tv news this morning -- I was looking at the websites. Would have thought CNN's site would show dancing in the streets.

If the Times is for it, it's probably a big defeat for the U.S. and a big win for our adversaries. Boycott the Times!

I haven't read the Times in ages -- not since I found out they don't have a comics section. :)

That was wise. It would have been a distortion of constitutional intent. Now, we could argue, why should one more distortion make a difference but this President is in favor of constitutionalists so to be consistent he needed to avoid repeat recess appointments specifically designed to bypass consent of the Senate.

And I think it shows what a tough and honorable guy Bolton is -- another recess appointment would have seemed like the wimpy way to keep his job.
