Wife and two daughters of senior editor James Kim found in Oregon; search is still on for James Kim, who left the car on foot two days ago.

The wife and daughters of missing CNET senior editor James Kim have been found alive and airlifted to a local hospital, authorities announced at a press conference in Merlin, Ore., Monday afternoon.

James Kim left the car on snowshoes two days ago to seek help and has not been found, the official said. The search for him continues.

According to the official speaking at the news conference, the conditions of Kati, Penelope and Sabine are not yet known. More details are expected at a press conference at 5 p.m. PST, which CNET will stream live.

Kati Kim reportedly flagged down a helicopter rented by families of the missing persons.

After searches in Oregon's Curry and Douglas counties, new information on missing CNET senior editor James Kim and his family narrowed the search back to the Bear Camp area in Josephine County, according to reports Monday.

A cell phone tower received a signal from one of the family's cell phones at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday near Glendale, but officials say the signal is only an indicator the family could have been within 26 miles of Glendale at that time, according to a report in The Oregonian.

When I was lost hunting a few weeks ago, I whisteled real loud and my partner heard me and whistled back till I found the truck. It worked great. By the way - being lost in the dense woods is terrifying. I had anxiety just thinking about how he must feel.

I was backpacking in AR (alone) many years ago, and lost the trail. I went in the direction I thought would lead to the road, and tried to follow the sun west..An hour and a half later, I came back to the same place I'd been. I had just went in a big circle.

God must look after fools like me because I finally found the trail. With darkness setting in, I was pretty scared. I decided no more lone backpacking for me.

You know...most of us have innate modesty...I wonder if anyone lost like this would hear noises and think they were just for him?

LOL.....if I had been lost in the woods for days, I would immediately head towards any loud sound, esp. if it was something like a continuous 'blast horn' (not something that's usually heard in the woods)

Is this more clothing found today? Rather than the items found yesterday?

Does anyone know if they are using some kind of blast horn to make a massive noise that he could hear?

I've wondered this since the beginning. You would think it would help immeasurably.

He was found Sat. Dec. 2., so it was fifteen days. We also had that real cold snap and a bunch of snow during that time.

Searchers have narrowed it down to a 3-mile section of the gorge.

They just found a man that had been lost near Mt. Adams here in Washington State since Nov. 18th.

I wasn't aware of that rescue effort or that the man was even missing. That's great!

Here's one off the coast they've given up on:

Search suspended for small plane, crash victims

09:13 AM PST on Wednesday, December 6, 2006 AP

COOS BAY, Ore. -- The Coos County sheriff's office has suspended the search for wreckage at the site of a weekend small plane crash just off the Oregon coast.

A boat equipped with sonar gear searched the ocean offshore yesterday. But there was NO sign of wreckage on the ocean floor.

The homemade small plane crashed into the ocean last Saturday afternoon about 300 yards offshore.

Chuck Holloway, a 62-year-old Coos Bay doctor, and 38-year-old Dan Kelley of North Bend were reported aboard the plane when it went down. Both men are presumed dead.

The article I just read is a little more heartening. I don't think he'd be wearing a girl's skirt or part of a state map.

Various items, including a wool sock, a girl's skirt and part of an Oregon state map, have been found by crews lowered into the canyon where Kim is believed to have traveled after leaving his wife and two children to get help.

<>A small one in any 'survival kit' might be a good idea also.

Actually, whistles are among the must-have items for a survival kit. They're just as loud, and don't run out of air until you do.

I don't think most visitors realize how remote and dense our forests are or how our weather can change so quickly. I hope that this story gets that message out.
