Bush accepts Bolton's U.N. resignation

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent 12 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Unable to win Senate confirmation, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton will step down when his temporary appointment expires within weeks, the White House said Monday. ADVERTISEMENT

Bolton's nomination has languished in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for more than a year, blocked by Democrats and several Republicans. Sen. Lincoln Chafee (news, bio, voting record), a moderate Republican who lost in the midterm elections Nov. 7 that swept Democrats to power in both houses of Congress, was adamantly opposed to Bolton.

Critics have questioned Bolton's brusque style and whether he could be an effective bureaucrat who could force reform at the U.N.

President Bush gave Bolton the job temporarily in August 2005, while Congress was in recess. Under that process, the appointment expires when Congress formally adjourns, no later than early January.

The White House resubmitted Bolton's nomination last month. But with Democrats capturing control of the next Congress, his chances of winning confirmation appeared slight. .....

Considering the fact that you didn't listen to us on 'the right' before you 'realists' got your butt cheeks taped together by the Dems last month

You see, there's the problem right there; the continual separation of the party; quite simply put, you all refuse to face what is really going on in this country and you refused to compromise for the good of the country. Even now with proof right in front of your eyes that this country is not as "conservative" as you are, you refuse to even consider the fact that you just may have pushed the GOP too far to the right to ever get back in power again.

And now that you're successfully alienated those of us who you disdain -- the middle -- now what for you? Who exactly is going to fight for even HALF of your vaunted "principles" now?

I'll just put you down as unable to regurgitate anything except the usual pap from losers.

And I am a conservative, just not your "type."

This has been a very sad six years if you ask me; conservatives once again managed to snag defeat from the jaws of victory.

I'm sorry to see us eating our own here on FR. Why we're acting like DUmmies! Oh well. It's a frustrating time. Infighting and second-guessing often come with defeat.

What's your dream ticket '08?

knowing full well the democrats would have used that platform for '08 campaigning, Bolton has really taken the wind out of their sails

"Eating our own" is what this web site does best; in fact, it's what "real, true conservatives" do best. "Infighting and second guessing" has been at this web site since the day I got here in 1998.

And I don't have a candidate for anything in 2008; in fact, after the Democrats get through with the next two years, it's not going to matter who we pick; they already have it all wrapped up.

I will tell you one thing though: I'm not voting for ANY of the named candidates so far.

You see, there's the problem right there; the continual separation of the party;

Here we go again. Bitch at the conservative base for not doing enough.

you all refuse to face what is really going on in this country

Pardon me? Conservatives aren't facing reality?

Last time I checked the conservative side of the party wasn't supporting billions to build bridges to Fantasy Land in Alaska, spiral the Federal budget beyond even Clintons wildest dreams, and then try to get amnesty for 10 or 12 million criminals.

and you refused to compromise for the good of the country.

GMAFB.

Even now with proof right in front of your eyes that this country is not as "conservative" as you are,

Seems to me it was a lot more RINOs got picked off there sweetheart.

you refuse to even consider the fact that you just may have pushed the GOP too far to the right to ever get back in power again.

Or maybe you political geniuses pushed it too far to the left for us to ever take you seriously again.

And now that you're successfully alienated those of us who you disdain

Spare me the drama, Scarlett. The RINO establishment has been kickin the right wing in the face for decades. Look in a bloody mirror.

Who exactly is going to fight for even HALF of your vaunted "principles" now?

Who was doing it before?

So there goes the only Bush person I really like, besides Cheney and Snow. Well, and Bush -- but he's dropping in my esteem.

He may be wounded but he ain't dead yet.

Dubya is no amateur, he is pulling back to reorganize, but he is not quitting. Wait and see.

No, they are not, as evidenced by this last election; this country is almost evenly split between DNC and GOP, but compromise is out of the question from "our side."

The RINO establishment has been kickin the right wing in the face for decades.

And the EXTREME RIGHT WING has been blackmailing the GOP for years; we shall now see who is more sucessful in gaining back some meaningful power.

I doubt this time the GOP will be counting on the "right wing" of the party.

A perfect example of the "whole loaf" theory around here.

Let's see who fights for you now.

Well if past behavior is indicative of future behavior, and it usually is, we can be pretty sure it won't be you guys.

Power? Power? To do what??? Throw open the borders? form a North American Alliance? refuse to enshrine a 1 man-1 woman standard for marriage? Spend like drunken Democrats? Let Kennedy write education bills? fight a PC war that will only strengthen our enemies? spinelessly roll over for the democrats at each opportunity?

Two points Howlin: It seems that every time compromise was offered by Bush the Dems just go on the offensive; secondly, some of the Dems have run on a conservative platform and won. You have good points but I'm just not sure what it means in the big picture.

I vote for the lesser of the two evils in an imperfect world: Republicans.

Way lesser.
