Bush accepts Bolton's U.N. resignation

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent 12 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Unable to win Senate confirmation, U.N. Ambassador John Bolton will step down when his temporary appointment expires within weeks, the White House said Monday. ADVERTISEMENT

Bolton's nomination has languished in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for more than a year, blocked by Democrats and several Republicans. Sen. Lincoln Chafee (news, bio, voting record), a moderate Republican who lost in the midterm elections Nov. 7 that swept Democrats to power in both houses of Congress, was adamantly opposed to Bolton.

Critics have questioned Bolton's brusque style and whether he could be an effective bureaucrat who could force reform at the U.N.

President Bush gave Bolton the job temporarily in August 2005, while Congress was in recess. Under that process, the appointment expires when Congress formally adjourns, no later than early January.

The White House resubmitted Bolton's nomination last month. But with Democrats capturing control of the next Congress, his chances of winning confirmation appeared slight. .....

Whiner conservatives who didn't vote...the cause of Bolton's resignation

You are quite correct, but I haven't seen or heard from them since Nov 8th. I thought they were going to lead us to a 2008 revolution. Where are they??? (Back at DU???)

Pathetic.

This is why they lost. Idiots.

If they had any brains or guts, they'd have canned Chaffee and moved this ahead.

So there goes the only Bush person I really like, besides Cheney and Snow. Well, and Bush -- but he's dropping in my esteem.

What good is a leader who can't lead? Thank God Lincoln Chafee will not be around any more. Too bad Arlen Specter is still sucking up oxygen that a good rat could use. I guess our President will confer with his daddy to see if they can dig up another retread from #41 for the UN post whom the msm and the liberal Dems will like. Scowcroft comes to mind....

I've about had it with the conservatives who didn't vote argument. Here's a reality check, conservatives alone couldn't get a candidate elected to a city dog catchers job.If you think America is made up of conservatives your dreaming. The Republican Party had a chance over a 6 to 10 year period and blew it.They didn't stand up for their Party platform and they let the mainstream media play em like a violin and enough swing voters decided, "wrong" in my opinion, it time for them to go !!!

Took 11 posts before it was the Republicans fault. Of course, nobody is going to criticize the voters that stayed home!

>what is up with this 'eat our own' mentality?

It didn't start here.
It started with the fringe groups
turning on George Bush

with every issue
as if all the fringe nut jobs
defined the mainstream.

Maybe we could also resign from the UN,

we need allies that support the United States,

not a league with enemies at the UN.

What a shame. The last (only?) person in the administration with any balls. I guess Condi has free reign now to do absolutely nothing.

Who says conservatives are optimists?

If they closed the borders and deported illegals, I would vote for the Democrats.

What's the point of voting for a Republican, when all you get is more illegals and cheaper labor? Are you a lackey of the aristocracy that seeks to gain riches at the expense of lowering wages for the working middle class? Make sure you include all the costs borne by the middleclass associated with illegals -- higher health-care, greater taxes for welfare and policing, the need for homeland security to strip search all of us, social security for Mexicans, black market competition in blue collar jobs ... and so on. Thank El Presidente Bush for this. His globalism ranks right up there with the Democrats internationalism. They are nearly indistinguishable.

I believe both Republican Senators that were up for re-election (Chaffe and DeWine) who joined the Democrats to stop Bolton's confirmation were voted out of office. Seems to me the people sent a clear message that Republicans who go to bed with Democrats reap what they sow...

Bolton SHOULD have had Condi's job.

Works for me. Does he have to get approved by the UAC (unAmerican Congress), or can the President just choose? I'm already picking out his furniture and drapes.
