Where Have All the Conservatives Gone? Right Runs Out of Potential Presidents

Sunday , December 03, 2006

By Susan Estrich

Where have all the conservatives gone?

Are there going to be any running for President?

First it was Virginia’s George Allen, the great white hope, the George on a horse, the governor with a smile, on his way to a White House run, once he got past that frisky re-election campaign.

He was, less than a short year ago, the Hotline’s unknown front-runner, the insider’s best guess, the neocon’s next new best friend.

Now, thanks to a Macaca joke, a ham sandwich joke, a terrible campaign, and some smart moves by senator-elect Jim Webb, he’s toast.

Then there was Rick Santorum. Mr. Conservative. Surely he would at least make a run. Give the hard core a place to be. Just as soon as he got past his Senate re-election campaign in Pennsylvania. The number three Senate Republican and conservative stalwart is as good a friend as conservatives have in the Senate.

Correction: Had. History.

Hello Bob Casey. Goodbye Rick Santorum. Another one bites the dust.

I don't doubt that at all.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

You're wrong. Dead wrong, in fact.

I want a candidate that can articulate principles I believe in *and* survive the attacks of a hostile fourth estate. Politics is dirty, bloody business. I want a fighter, not a clod who thinks he deserves your vote because you happen to agree with him.

I'm saying that anyone that comes anywhere close to the principles I support will NOT be vetted by big media. They will be destroyed. They can give the Allen treatment to anyone they choose. And they choose to do it to all Conservatives.

Re Allen's prospects, a lot depends on what he does now that he's out of office. Useless status-idolizing office-seekers don't dedicate themselves to any Causes if there's not something in it for them directly. That kind of semi-paracytism probably describes most politicians.

I will be positively impressed by any prospective candidates who first launch Policy Reform Organizations, websites, etc. re specific issues and demonstrate some actual dedication to public service and grass-roots organizing when they're not recieving a paycheck for it.

Newt won't get the friendly media cover that Clinton did but hey, don't let me dissuade you. I have quite a few bones to pick with Gingrich but he certainly sounds better than some of the riff raff the MSM and their friends on FR are pushing.

Think the GOP learned anything? I'm betting against it.

I can't argue with you there. In fact, as my own posts show here, I agree with you.

Bayh's campaign is prepping for their announcement to run soon... probably this week. (Little news-blurb on the local news hyped his "careful consideration" earlier today.)

Okay. Thanks for that clarification. It shouldn't be too much to ask for a competent conservative who actually lives by some principles should it?

7 years ago, half of FR was calling Dubya a liberal like his dad when it came to social issues.

They'll probably throw up another Bob Dole, or somesuch critter. The Republican Party won't risk it for a real conservative, even if in their hearts they know they won't win. They're still gonna try and win it with money and hope the electorate will hate what the Dems are going to do in the next two years. They don't realize that there is no telling what W is gonna do in the next two years and I fear that he is going to capitulate to them on many many things. There is no one, no one in the wings right now that is up for the real job.

He would probably carry a lot of the same states that "conservative" Democrats picked up in 2006.

He only needs ONE state to flip from the 2000 or 2004 state breakdowns... and Indiana WILL go for him, despite being so heavily GOP. I know several Hoosier FReepers who have said they would vote for him if he was running for prez. Even as Veep, he likely carries the day for the Dems in '08.

>>Rightwing non-voters brilliant political strategy of "sending a message".<<

They are like turkeys standing in the pouring rain with their beaks turned straight up waiting for it to stop. Sadly they still think the rain will stop in two years.

But really, how conservative is Fred? I remember Brit's panel (I believe) on Fox News during the whole Chinagate thing asking the same question.
