CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez, an outspoken opponent of the United States who has used Venezuela's oil wealth to give handouts to the poor, won re-election to another six-year term by a wide margin on Sunday, official results showed.

With 78 percent of voting stations reporting, Chavez had 61 percent to 38 percent for challenger Manuel Rosales, said Tibisay Lucena, head of the country's elections council. Chavez had nearly 6 million votes versus 3.7 million for Rosales, according to the partial tally.

Turnout was 62 percent, according to an official bulletin of results, making Chavez's lead insurmountable.

Is Cindy Sheehan going to be there for a prize for winning the election? Hmm?

Cindy is still having a political orgasm!!!!!
Baghdad Bob must be his spokes person. I could make the same claims come true if I were a third world dictator.
What's this punk going to do when an oil alternative is developed and we share it with the whole world.
Make him choke on that oil.

That comes from a friend of mine from Venezuela. She says that most people hate Chavez, but are afraid to vote against him because they fear retaliation.

It's amazing how well totalitarian dictators fare in elections.

You're mistaken here.El Commandante Pocito has done quite poorly today. But rest assured that by the next "election" he will have ensured that he'll get 98% of the vote....just like Mao,Stalin, etc.

So what happens to the 38% who did not vote for Chavez?

Prison camps, death?

Uh what exactly are you saying here? I'm tempted to hit the abuse button but I guess I'll wait a bit. You seem to be insulting all of America here... either that or you using racist terms. Both interpretations are out of line.

Chavez wins re-election by wide margin

If that's the case, it's hard to explain why he had Telemundo shut down from broadcasting from his country.

Maybe when the Telemundo reporters make it back to the US, we'll get the real story ... and maybe not, they are after all part of the same group withing GE that runs PMSNBC.

What I am saying is that we (Americans) do not invest nearly the energy or funds in our next door neighbors as we do in the other side of the world. Most on this forum deride and castigate anyone that speaks Spanish or any foreign language.

Much focus is placed upon all things Middle East, while our friends and neighbors are crapped on and derided. This opinion earns one a label here. It is FROBL. Such statements as I have made usually draw out a "he11 yeah!" crowd.

Fortunately, you are paying attention. If indeed you are offended, I have no problem with you requesting that the post be pulled.

This one's going to get the stamp of approval from MSM. We won't see "voting irregularity" stories, I'm sure.

So the ignorant masses march down the socialist road.

A communist is someone who reads Marx. An anti-communist is someone who understands Marx. -Ronald Reagan

It's going to be a long road with no end in sight.
