Theresa Marie Schindler was born to Robert and Mary Schindler on December 3, 1963. She was the first of three children the Schindlers would have.

Terri was a shy, but comical, child who had an affinity for music, animals and the arts. She kept a small circle of friends and was dear to schoolmates, neighboring families and her own extended family.

Following high school, Terri came into her own. She developed a knack for sketching and doodling. She enjoyed outings with her friends. She was an adoptive mother to the family’s dog, Bucky.

Terri attended Catholic School while growing up and remained close to her faith throughout her life.

In 1983, Terri met Michael Schiavo at Bucks County Community College and the two began dating. He was the first romantic interest Terri had.

The couple was engaged within a few months and married a year later at Terri’s church in Southampton, Pa. She was 21.

In 1986, Terri and Michael relocated to Pinellas County, Florida and her parents followed three months later.

In 1990, at the age of 26, Terri suffered a mysterious cardio-respiratory arrest for which no cause has ever been determined. She was diagnosed with hypoxic encephalopathy – neurological injury caused by lack of oxygen to the brain. Terri was placed on a ventilator, but was soon able to breathe on her own and maintain vital function. She remained in a severely compromised neurological state and was provided a PEG tube to ensure the safe delivery of nourishment and hydration.

On March 31, 2005, Terri Schindler Schiavo died of marked dehydration following more than 13 days without nutrition or hydration under the order of Circuit Court Judge, George W. Greer of the Pinellas-Pasco’s Sixth Judicial Court. Terri was 41.

I was recently given a book called " Can a Catholic be a Democrat?" To tell you the truth, I probably won't read the book (although I hear good things about it), because it's bound to be 220 pages of "no."

Is this a question that really needs asking, "can a devout Catholic be a faithful Democrat?" I think we all know the answer. The Church has 5 non-negotiable issues. Any candidate that supports these issues cannot be supported or voted for by a Catholic, simple as that. To do so would be a sin. What are these five non-negotiable issues? To list them off sounds like one is reading the Democratic platform: embryonic stem cell research, gay marriage, abortion, euthanasia, and human cloning.

The Dems showed us all a while back that euthanasia wasn't just a dream of theirs when they had Terri Schiavo starved to death against her mother and father's wishes. Adding to the "can a Democrat be a Catholic" argument, they wouldn't even allow a dieing Schiavo a measly crumb of Holy Eucharist.

Can a Catholic be a Democrat? Sure. But will that Dem be a Catholic in way other than name? Certainly not. The Democratic party's platform is almost in complete contradiction to the teachings of the Catholic faith (with the exception, perhaps, of Catholic Social Teaching, which fits perfectly due to it's heavy borrowing from Socialism). All five of the Catholic church's non-negotiable issues seem to be taken directly from the Democratic party's platform. To vote Democrat is, in almost all cases, wrong and against Church teachings. "Catholic" politicians such as Nancy Pelosi (D, CA) and Jennifer Granholm (D, MI) should be excommunicated for their support of abortion.

Can a devout Catholic be a faithful Democrat? Absolutely not!

Teri Schiavo - the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness guaranteed in our Bill of Rights incorporated in our Constitution should extend to a brain damaged and handicapped adult, as well as to the fetus or handicapped child. Ms. Schiavo was not being kept alive "artificially," except with the provision of basic sustenance, food and water, was Catholic by all accounts with no living will in existence, had family ready and willing to continue to care and provide for her needs, yet a Florida judge in truth ignored her Constitutional "right to life" and sanctioned her murder in the name of awarding legal "custody" and control to her husband, a "legal" bigamist.

Georgia and an opinion...

If only such guidance were in place, Mikey could have just said, "Golly, I don't even have to kill anyone, not even the cats, and hurt the feelings of in-laws, because of this making it all clear."

Now that the Georgia General Assembly is back in session, it must tackle its constitutional assignment of setting tax policies, approving a budget and dealing with key issues such as education, health care and transportation.

In a 40-day session, that's a lot to get done. So time shouldn't be wasted. As a service to our hard-working solons, I've been through the 70 or so bills that were filed even before the session began. Here's a quick, clip-and-save analysis. The real stinkers:

• HB 1 — Outlaws abortions of all kinds. Abortion is a difficult and emotionally charged issue, but this bill — filed every year — represents an extreme response that represents the viewpoint of an extreme minority.

• HB 24 — Creates a new legal document for advanced medical directives; it would be more effective than current Living Will and Durable Power of Attorney documents in stipulating who can make end-of-life decisions for incapacitated patients. This could help prevent horrible intrafamily disputes like the Terri Schiavo case in Florida.

A sharp warning about Living Wills from Prof. Amos. Medics don't read them because -- at least in their own view -- Living Wills are death wishes. The Death Camp must be laughing out loud behind closed doors. They tell us all that we MUST have a living will FOR OUR OWN PROTECTION. But living wills won't protect us. They will do the opposite -- get us neglected and killed.

"The problem is that doctors and nurses don't read them. It does not matter how carefully a lawyer may word a living will. It does not matter where the living will draws the line about when you want to be treated and when you don't want to be treated. What the document says is irrelevant.

"Go to any critical care center and you will see handwritten signs by magic marker taped on the door or near the patient saying "Living Will." So on a sheet of typing paper there will only be two words "Living Will." It says nothing else.

"Those two words are short hand to the medical personnel that: "This person does not want to live. If there is any downturn in the condition let him (or her) die." So, for example if there is a heart attack, don't use CPR.

"People and their lawyers think that a living will tells the medical community that you don't want to be kept on a respirator or other expensive lifesustaining emergency and critical care equipment if your organs are shutting down from cancer or some such, or if you are becoming brain dead.

"But people do not know that having a living will and telling the doctors and nurses about it means that they have just given the medical community the green light to provide substandard care and to pay only minimal attention to the patient because this patient wants to die."
