Georgia and an opinion...

If only such guidance were in place, Mikey could have just said, "Golly, I don't even have to kill anyone, not even the cats, and hurt the feelings of in-laws, because of this making it all clear."

Now that the Georgia General Assembly is back in session, it must tackle its constitutional assignment of setting tax policies, approving a budget and dealing with key issues such as education, health care and transportation.

In a 40-day session, that's a lot to get done. So time shouldn't be wasted. As a service to our hard-working solons, I've been through the 70 or so bills that were filed even before the session began. Here's a quick, clip-and-save analysis. The real stinkers:

• HB 1 — Outlaws abortions of all kinds. Abortion is a difficult and emotionally charged issue, but this bill — filed every year — represents an extreme response that represents the viewpoint of an extreme minority.

• HB 24 — Creates a new legal document for advanced medical directives; it would be more effective than current Living Will and Durable Power of Attorney documents in stipulating who can make end-of-life decisions for incapacitated patients. This could help prevent horrible intrafamily disputes like the Terri Schiavo case in Florida.

Ah, the urges of liberal writers to be The Emperor and put their curse or blessing on pending legislation. If we would just listen to them, there would be no need a republican form of government. There would be no need to vote. All we'd have to do is kiss their feet and give them all of our possessions.
