WASHINGTON - Democrats and Republicans should work together to find new ways to end poverty, curb government corruption and strengthen families, Rev. Jim Wallis said Saturday.
"Answering the call to lift people out of poverty will require spiritual commitment and bipartisan political leadership," Wallis, the head of the liberal Sojourners/Call to Renewal, an evangelical social justice movement, said in the weekly Democratic radio address.
"Real solutions must transcend partisan politics," he said. "It is time to find common ground by moving to higher ground."
President Bush has signaled his readiness to consider Democratic priorities such as a federal minimum-wage increase with certain amendments and to find compromise on renewing the No Child Left Behind education law and overhauling immigration policy.
Incoming Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said he was pleased the nonpartisan Wallis gave the address — even though the religious leader has been openly critical of Democratic politicians and titled his best-selling book "God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It" — because Democrats "need to move beyond partisanship in Washington and find common ground to move America forward."
In the address, Wallis stressed the spiritual underpinnings of issues facing the new Congress, saying leaders need a "new, morally centered discourse on politics."
"Corruption in government violates our basic principles," he said. "Money and power distort our political decision-making and even our elections."
He said protecting the environment is a "moral and religious question" and that changing U.S. policy in Iraq is essential.
"Leaders in both parties are acknowledging that the only moral and practical course is to dramatically change the direction of U.S. policy, starting with an honest national debate about how to extricate U.S. forces from Iraq with the least possible damage to everyone involved," Wallis said.
He also suggested both parties could find common ground on the divisive issue of abortion.
"Wouldn't coming together to find common ground that dramatically reduces the number of abortions be better than both the left and the right using it as an issue to divide us?" he asked.

That's right, "Rev." Wallis, we need to come together as long as it is on Democrat's terms. Why didn't he say that during the last six years? Republicans should stonewall every initiative put forward by the Dems. Period.

Sad thing is: Many congressional Republicans will fall for this yet again.
Whoa, whoa, whoa...a preacher is giving the official Democratic radio address? Refresh my memory, but has the GOP ever had someone heading up a non-profit religious organization give an official address on it's behalf?
I don't ever remember someone like Dr. James Dobson or Gary Bauer or Jerry Falwell giving the Republican radio address during the Clinton years. Does anybody else?

Well, Wallis is a liberal and liberals believe charity should only come from the government.

Joking aside, Rs need to and can do much more. The great thing is the media will be somewhat "nuetralized," yes, on the one hand they have a strong leftwing bias, but, on the other, they thrive on controversy and conflict. It will be easy to build unrealizable expectations and play on conflicts between the moonbats and centrists.
So, why hasn't it started already?
The GOP can get along with Liberals like we can get along with terrorists. Not in this lifetime.

When Wallis talks about cooperation what he is saying is that the GOP should cooperate with the leftist RATs as they submit RAT legislation to the POTUS.
This is from the preacher who made his fame by insisting that "God Is Not a Republican . . . or a Democrat." Looks like he's beyond all that now.
The only common ground with a liberal traitor is in the cemetery, and that is only because I have not yet found a cemetery that bans liberals.
I have told some liberals that I will support these traitors that they elected in the same betraying manner that they supported the American soldiers in times of war.
Liberal evangelical ? That's like a Jewish Nazi or a peaceful Muslim.
Wallis can take a hike. His party wants to raise taxes, cut and run from Iraq, and engage in infanticide-on-demand.
At least the reporter was honest enough to identify his cause as "liberal".
