Residents use pig races to deter building of mosque

Residents don't want group in their area

KTRK By Ted Oberg

- There's an awful lot of exciting news when you round the corner on Baker Road. One of two big yellow signs announces a new neighbor is coming soon.

K.I.A., that's the Katy Islamic Association, plan to build a mosque here.

"It's not an appropriate place to have a mosque or church," said resident Barbara Simpson.

It isn't going over real well.

"As a house of worship, they shouldn't be disturbing the peace and tranquility of 15 homes," said resident John Wetmore.

Neighbors tell us they're concerned about traffic and drainage and a little fear of the unknown. Some of the homeowners even offered to buy the land back for more than a million dollars. The K.I.A. doesn't seem very interested in the offers.

"We're not going anywhere," said Katy Islamic Association member Alvi Muzfar.

So it seems the community at the end of Baker Road has a pretty good fight. But this fight has gone much farther than many between two neighbors. You see in these fights, sometimes neighbors throw mud at one another. In this instance, they're wallowing in it.

Craig Baker owns pigs. He's the guy behind the second big yellow sign on Baker Road. That's the one announcing Friday night pig races.

"What does it matter, I can do whatever I want with my land right," asked landowner Craig Baker.

Sure can. But aren't pigs on the property line racing on a Friday night a little offensive to a Muslim neighbor?

"The meat of a pig is prohibited in the religion of Islam," said Katy Islamic Association member Youssof Allam. "It's looked upon as a dirty creature."

Yeah, there's that and also that Friday night is a Muslim holy day.

"That is definitely a slap in the face," said Allam..

Now before you go thinking Craig Baker is unfair, or full of hate, or somehow racist, hear him out.

Baker has long roots here. His family named the road and when the new neighbors moved in, he tells us, they asked him to move out.

"Basically that I should package up my family and my business and find a place elsewhere," said Baker. "That's ridiculous, they just bought the place one week prior and he's telling me I should think about leaving."

That new owners deny they ever said anything like that, but Baker isn't budging.

Baker admits the pigs are a message he is not leaving.

The 11-acre property is sandwiched between a pricey subdivision and Craig Baker's business.

K.I.A. eventually plans to build a mosque, a gym and a school there. There's no date for the groundbreaking ceremonies, or the first pig race.

If the decibel-level exceeds the ordinance, then both are illegal. (Don't shoot me, I'm just telling it like it is).

Precisely. Freedom of religion is like any other freedom, it has to exist in the framework of a community where other's rights should also be observed. It is not carte blanche to ruin the quality of everyone else's life.

About 30 years ago I was living in Winter Park, FL. Some Christian church built a HUGE complex a few blocks away. It was way too large for the area infrastructure. We had terrible flooding in the summer. We had horrendous parking problems when they had services. I was 3 blocks away and had people parallel parking in front of my driveway. Our complaints about that had nothing to do with religion. Church or not, they needed to be subject to the same rules as the rest of the community. That is not restricting their right to believe or worship.

Because we were a residential area, I believe that a commercial business of that size and impact would not have been allowed to build to that extent.

My personal opinion is that all churches should pay the same property taxes as everyone else. They use the same services, local resources and infrastructure. By not doing so, the government is forcing me, as a taxpayer, to subsidize religious organizations. That certainly seems like a violation of the Constitution. Paying for government services that one receives certainly doesn't prohibit people form worshiping as they choose.

Gee, I don't know, you're so smart, do you worship a crucifix? Or a menora? Or a saint? Or the chalice? Or the Star of David? As opposed to God? Duh.

"I think you have something here - if we start having national "pig races" all over the country wouldn't that be a "peaceful" way of driving the Muslim extemists out. I'll be glad to go to a pig race to support the American WAY! I'd like to have a piggy named Allah's Just the Devil!"

I find it a proactive peaceful message. As an aside, neither my mother nor my sister eat pork for religious reasons. I say whatever, I love center pulled pork with a mustard vinegar sauce. It's just my nature.

I think I will name mine Ali Hogzilla Mohammed.

If you are a muslim then you should be brave enough to state so. Jews have no problem proclaiming their faith. Christians have no problem proclaiming their faith. Me? I believe in a Supreme Being. So I don't believe we are placed here by chance. And yea, it may take me a time or two before I get it right due to my indecisiveness. So no, I don't believe I get but one chance. That's up to the Master and not anyone else.

So pray tell Williams, exactly where are you coming from?
Are you a Muslim?

Simply put, why don't you kiss my ass? I'm a Roman Catholic you idiot! You must see moslems under your bed at night. Just because I don't want a nation built on religious freedom to start carrying out insane pogroms doesn't mean I'm a moslem, or that I have any sympathy for islamic terrorists. You have some nerve asking my religion, some damn nerve. Nobody asked your religion, I could care less.

"Are there pre WWII Jewish acts against Germans/Germany that would correspond to 9/11, the Cole, Khobar Towers etc.?"

There is not a single published reference offering anything remotely related.

I sure hope you are on your way to (m)ass now after behaving so sinfully.

Destroying evil is not hatred. It's good. Now, the debate comes down to WHO is good and WHO is evil. I vote for the Islamic radicals as being evil BECAUSE of the evil they practice in ordering killing of people (especially innocents not directly involved in the conflict), ordering the death of those who leave the religion, etc.
I vote the same way.

"Deport them and destroy their places of worship. No compromise. "

I was hoping we could use those as educational and recreational facilities once they have left. No need to destroy a good facility. As nice as we can, ask them to return their mohammedland. Go in peace. But whatever you do, just go and leave us alone.

If that fails, then other options are still on the table.

My emotions on this subject are all a product of 911. I recognize the enemy, and the enemy is Islam. The evidence is overwhelming.

So when Baker wants to have a pig race in Katy Tx. to oppose a mosque being built on the perimeter of his property, I want to support him in remembrance of 911.

viva Hogzilla viva The Baker Pig Races in Katy.

I would have to completely agree with that conclusion. Give them a nonviolent chance to leave.

In case you don't know this, you never had any credibility and you won't be getting any by saying i'm a moslem or a terrorist, and I suppose I'm not exactly breaking new ground by saying you're a jackass, so have a nice day. I don't behave sinfully by standing up to ignorant nonsense.

"Because of the existing well founded suspicion of Islamic culture, it is incumbent of the developers of the local mosque to be particularly open and transparent with their plans and intentions. Otherwise, the surrounding community justifiably views their intentions with concern and dismay. "

I suspect the pig races will continue no matter what the muslims do.
