BOSTON -- In the space of barely a minute, John Kerry's political life took an abrupt turn. There's before The Joke, when the Massachusetts senator appeared to be well on his way toward making a political comeback, laying the groundwork for a White House bid despite losing the 2004 presidential election. Then there's after The Joke, when even fellow Democrats and former supporters question whether Kerry is still politically viable.
Kerry's quip just before the Nov. 7 midterm elections that those who don't study hard "get stuck in Iraq" not only forced him into isolation in the campaign's final days, it rekindled criticism about his failure to beat a war-plagued president two years ago. It also highlighted a shallowness to what he and his aides still considered to be widespread public support.
"The joke stopped that momentum in its track," said Jerry Crawford, a Des Moines attorney who was chairman of Kerry's Iowa campaign in 2004. "I don't think it was fair the way it was used against him, but it's nevertheless the reality. And it knocks him back to the place where he was shortly after the '04 election."
Crawford will be supporting Tom Vilsack, Iowa's outgoing governor, as he makes a run for the Democratic nomination in 2008. He said that is based on their longstanding relationship, not any falling out with Kerry.

His usual reply: "It was the Republicans who..."
They are still calling his statement a joke, even though Kerry was the only one who saw any humor in it. IMO Kerry was a dead duck long before he opened his mouth, about our military, however it seems to be the icing on the cake.
Now if only the voters of Massachusetts would wake up.
Too bad he's not eager to move past his botched life.
Kerry, "Blah blah blah"
Moderator "and your response to Senator Kerry?"
Candidate, "Well, I'm not sure if he's serious or if thats just another one of his botches jokes... but... I'll take him at him word this time..." LOL!!!!!!

Unfair? It was downright hurtful!
On the other hand, maybe this is just another botched joke.
Typical. It's not fair! rant. They should try being conservative for a week.
It's hilarious how he keeps calling attention to it. If he'd keep his mouth shut, it would go away on its own.
Just remeber one thing!
He was for the joke before he was against the joke.
Kerry is a reprehensible being. Only in the limelight due to John Heinz money. Why oh why didn't he have a pre-nup with that beast from Mozambique? Kerry held back $15 million in his 2004 race and lost by a hair. Veterans hate him (whether he knows it or not). He should just shut up, but media loves his nuancing.
Oh, ya mean kinda like it was Not Fair when the DBM/dems were accusing Repubs of STARVING seniors because they were going to CUT their social Security? That kinda not fair???
KMA Jerry! Typical whiny prick!
Kerry was not making a joke. He was serious and he considered his message to be important.
It is nothing to the point that he has misjudged the electors.
Kerry is locked into the VietNam struggle as his raison d'etre.
Or the kind of fair like saying Bush was going to reinstate the draft that ONLY some democrats wanted...
the only joke is kerry himself....this a-hole still thinks that he still could elected president!!!!
Kerry is like a dog trying to get rid of a can tied to its tail.
It was no joke. It was what he wanted to say. When the feathers hit the fan he and his advisors got together and decided that they could get their communist rears out of trouble by claiming that it was a botched joke. Of course the leftist media got their cue and repeated the lie.
