Gainesville, Georgia, is halfway between our mountain and Atlanta airport. Gainesville is a huge chicken processing area. So, we see a lot of poultry trucks. These are wire cages piled ten high, about twenty wide, and about forty deep. Strapped down, they are a solid mass of nervous chickens having their feathers back-combed at 60 MPH,
Chickens dont have the best bowel control when they are at home and comfortable. Imagine what it is like if you are a chicken in the bottom row, with a thousand other hysterical chickens above you or upwind of you.
Hold that thought, and lets discuss politics.
Suppose you are, as I am, dedicated to the idea that women can do any job in this life, and should get equal pay for equal skill, knowledge and experience. Certain organizations would claim that makes you a feminist and a potential member/supporter of their group. But what do some feminist organizations actually stand for?
You will find many of them affiliated with A.N.S.W.E.R., and its socialist rallies in favor of various Arabic and Islamist governments, as against the US. And what is the attitude of those governments or would-be governments toward women? They consider women to be raw meat, who should not be educated but should be kept in bags. In short, if you arent careful about the feminist organizations you associate with, then you are the tenth chicken on that truck.
Lets say you are strongly in favor of better education for all children. You want your children and grandchildren, and everyone elses too, to have better educational opportunities. But is the truth about American education today?
Most of that takes place in public schools. And, for the last two generations, the cost of public education per student has gone steadily up, while the quality of that education has gone steadily down. If you want a real eye-opening experience, look up on the Internet, or in McGuffys Reader (which is still in print), the kind of exams that high school students had to pass a century ago. College graduates would have trouble with those exams, today.
Okay, you care about education. What do you do about it? If you associate with the National Education Association, any of its state affiliates, or any politician supported by any of them, then you are the tenth chicken on the edukashun truck.
Suppose you are a conservative Republican. (Yes, I know that species is endangered, and has been declared extinct several times.) Still, to labor on in the delusion that the US government can be made less expensive, less intrusive, and more competent.
So, you look at the two parties. You see that Republicans claim to favor these things. So you vote for Republicans. And government gets more expensive, more intrusive, and less competent by the year. You are the tenth chicken on that truck. But if you think the Democrats would provide better results, then you are the twentieth chicken on a very big truck this time.
There is one huge difference between the chickens on the truck and the voters in the US. The chickens didnt choose to put themselves on those trucks. And the chickens are on a one-time trip. Their next truck will be refrigerated, and the cages will say McNuggets on the side. We voters, on the other hand, get on each truck voluntarily. And, we are capable of being taken for a ride indefinitely, election after election, on issue after issue.
Think of that the next time you come upon a chicken truck on a Georgia highway. But if its a warm day, keep back 100 yards or so. Them chickens can get intense.
