Newly elected Senator Jim Webb, D-Va., was so infuriated by a remark from President George W. Bush that the former Marine officer was tempted to punch the commander-in-chief.
The confrontation, disclosed in the influential Washington, D.C.-based publication The Hill, came shortly after the midterm elections at a private White House reception for newly elected lawmakers.
Webb, who defeated Republican Sen. George Allen in Virginia, ran a campaign critical of the administrations Iraq policy, and has a son, a Marine lance corporal, serving in Iraq.
At the reception, Bush asked Webb how his son was doing.
Webb answered that he really wanted to see his son brought back home, a source close to Webb reported.
The Associated Press quoted Webb as saying, "I told him I'd like to get them out of Iraq."
"I didnt ask you that, I asked how hes doing, Bush countered, according to the source.
Emily Heil wrote in The Hill: "Webb confessed that he was so angered by this that he was tempted to slug the commander-in-chief, reported the source, but of course didnt.
Webbs spokeswoman Kristian Denny Todd confirmed that "Jim did have a conversation with Bush at that dinner. Basically, he asked about Jims son; Jim expressed the fact that he wanted to have him home.
Todd wouldnt comment on Bushs response.
I didn't vote for him, but as a Virginian may I offer my abject apologies for our elected Senator Boor who seems to believe that acting like Chavez is acceptable.
I never voted for President Clinton, but I at least had the civility to accept his presidency.
Please send Senator Boor some live chickens so that he can pluck and cook them in his hotel room a la Castro.
I am SOOOOOO sorry...
Is this how 50.2% of Virginians act? Do they agree with this classless POS?
LLS
Too bad he didn't give it a try. The new "Senator" could serve out his 6 years in a Federal Prison. Tough to make a roll call vote from there....
I propose a boxing match between "Gentleman Jimmy" Webb and Congressman Jim Moran, the Boston Strongboy. Fight to last until one of them is knocked out.
What is even worse is that he will be part of any laws passed.
Just another a-hole elected offical ready to serve the public in Washington.
Bush would kick his puny butt IMHO.
"Do they agree with this classless POS?"
I'm afraid too many of my fellow Virginians fell for his act. Below the surface he is not only a boor, but a Marxist.
Disgraceful. Hmmm.....John Warner hasn't chirped up yet. I should think the Senior Senator from Virginia would have some sensibility to correct this nasty little pornographer.
Oh, well. Senility comes to the best of us.
Hubris. It always comes before a fall.
Thats hysterical! lol
I was just going to request that no one post pics of this lunatic.
What makes you so sure that Allen was turned out by cut and run conservatives here? There are plenty of Blue Staters moving into Northern Virginia who registered and voted for Webb. Hell, I know some of 'em.
I voted for Allen; I did my part.
President Bush missed an opportunity. He should have called the Secret Service over, have them ask Webb to stand aside, and then place a call to Marine Webb. The conversation would be...
P.B. "Marine Webb, this is President Bush. I am calling to ask how you are. Your dad is here, and he just about told me it wasn't any of my business. Hope that all is well. Keep up the good work. Now here ya go, I think ya might want to say something to your old man."
Just once I'd like to read an article where Bush punched out a senator or a congressman.....
Last I checked, there was a difference between "tempted to" and "threatened to".
Why does Mr. Webb strike me as one very insecure individual?
Webb: "I'd like to get him out of Iraq." Translation: I'm much more concerned about me and my feelings.
Bush: "I didnt ask you that, I asked how hes doing, Translation: It's not about you, Jimbo. How's your son?
Webb: (Considers catching a felony assault charge)
The democrats have been taking shots at this president ever since he took office.I'm just surprised that Webb didn't continue the democrat tradition of sticking him in his back.
