George Will: "Webb Offends Bush & the English Language" (Calls Jim Webb deranged "pompous poseur")
Real Clear Politics ^ | 11/30/2006 | George Will

WASHINGTON -- That was certainly swift. Washington has a way of quickly acculturating people, especially those who are most susceptible to derangement by the derivative dignity of office. But Jim Webb, Democratic senator-elect from Virginia, has become a pompous poseur and an abuser of the English language before actually becoming a senator.

Wednesday's Washington Post reported that at a White House reception for newly elected members of Congress, Webb "tried to avoid President Bush,'' refusing to pass through the reception line or have his picture taken with the president. When Bush asked Webb, whose son is a Marine in Iraq, "How's your boy?'' Webb replied, "I'd like to get them (sic) out of Iraq.'' When the president again asked, "How's your boy?'' Webb replied, "That's between me and my boy.'' Webb told the Post:

"I'm not particularly interested in having a picture of me and George W. Bush on my wall. No offense to the institution of the presidency, and I'm certainly looking forward to working with him and his administration. (But) leaders do some symbolic things to try to convey who they are and what the message is."

Webb certainly has conveyed what he is: a boor. Never mind the patent disrespect for the presidency. Webb's more gross offense was calculated rudeness toward another human being -- one who, disregarding many hard things Webb had said about him during the campaign, asked a civil and caring question, as one parent to another. When -- if ever -- Webb grows weary of admiring his new grandeur as a "leader'' who carefully calibrates the "symbolic things'' he does to convey messages, he might consider this: In a republic, people decline to be led by leaders who are insufferably full of themselves.

Well, that does not bode well for Hillary then does it?

Well, as August said 2000 yrs ago, when he needed to cut someone off, he merely refused his house to that person, with great decorum and without any scandal. It probably would be a while till Webb is invited again.

I was going to say something like that.

This one was perfect.

Well Will's bosses at the Wash Compost got what they were wishing for, a democrat loon to represent Virginia, instead of a resonable person as in George Allen.

Georgie now has free reign without worrying about the suits at the Compost witholding his paycheck.

JMO, let Georgie and his Compost bosses lay in the bed they made, they deserve it.

Webb replied, "That's between me and my boy.''

When next the two meet, if they do, President Bush will treat this, person, as if this event had never occurred, which makes him the far better man.

I called Webb worse than that but I cannot say it on this site. He was and is a disgrace to the United States, and the American people.

Well, poseur- yes, lousy manners - yes, but as for the language - it could be ascribed to "creative usage". Sometimes it is made more explicit, for obvious reasons. Once in a graduate school I used the following line on a [single] interlocutor: "You are wrong. Both of you". Since he was rather alone, the last line did throw him a bit off balance.

Webb showed a lack of tact and common courtesy. Also, he showed that he wanted everyone to know about his offensive behavior to the president because he was the source for the news article. I guess he realized that he need to make points with Harry Reid and the far left wing that run the Dems and tell those moderates who voted for him and not Allen to "get lost, I'm in and I don't need you any more."

"In a republic, people decline to be led by leaders who are insufferably full of themselves."

Unfortunately we are stuck with this restless idiot for the next 6 years.

On a lighter note, I wonder what would Sen. Kerry say to the people of Virginia...

Webb, being the southbound end of a northbound horse, should be reminded of Caligula replacing a Senator with a horse.

After all, one is the southbound end of a northbound horse, the other is merely a horse.

Mr. Will's description of Jim Webb is quite accurate, IMHO: A pompous poseur. And it dovetails with Mr. Tyrrell's assessment wherein he describes guesting Mr. Webb to dinner some years back.

This Virginian didn't vote for Webb. I thought he was a punk then, and he has proved me right.

"disgrace" applies to the voters who elected him. he - per se - does not even exist as a human being, but is a figurehead and a symbol [all of them are].
