Webb certainly has conveyed what he is: a boor. Never mind the patent disrespect for the presidency. Webb's more gross offense was calculated rudeness toward another human being -- one who, disregarding many hard things Webb had said about him during the campaign, asked a civil and caring question, as one parent to another. When -- if ever -- Webb grows weary of admiring his new grandeur as a "leader" who carefully calibrates the "symbolic things" he does to convey messages, he might consider this: In a republic, people decline to be led by leaders who are insufferably full of themselves.
But notice, in the second sentence of Webb's column, the word "infinitely." Earth to Webb: Words have meanings that not even senators can alter. And he has been elected to be a senator, not Humpty Dumpty in "Through the Looking Glass." ("When I use a word it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.") America's national economic statistics are excellent; Webb could actually tell us how much richer the "top tier" has become, relative to other cohorts, over a particular span. But that would require him to actually say whom he is talking about, and that takes time and effort, and senators -- Webb is a natural -- often are too busy for accuracy.

You might be surprised how Webb votes on any future Bush SC nominee.
Reminds me of what my mom used to say about these kinds of actions--something about cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. This is what the "lesson teachers" have done, but they've done it to all of us.
Well, you're a waste of oxygen.
Stir things up, or shut things down in order to start the liberal "utopia" where no crime is actually criminal (judges), no war should be fought (presumably not even to defend ourselves), and schools should only teach "self esteem"?
That is what you and others who voted for 'rats have wrought. I hope you're happy. I hope you remain happy when the next attack hits us (as it undoubtedly will now that the terrorists are emboldened and the 'rats will have shut down the Patriot Act), and indeed, I suspect you might be among the first targets, poised as you are on the East Coast (one of their preferred target areas).
I have no respect for people who have done what you did.
I doubt it.
What concerns me is the nominees that will permitted to come to the floor. I'm assuming Webb will NOT be on the committee that makes that decision, correct me if I'm wrong.
Webb will vote against any conservative Supreme Court nominee by Bush.
Near the end of his term he may be allowed to vote in favor of a moderate conservative for re-election purposes.
But since Hillary will be making those nominations it's more probable he'll be allowed to vote against a radically liberal nominee- if his vote isn't needed.
Guess it's safe to say he bought into the wealthy trial lawyer John Edwards' "two Americas" mythical analysis!
Neither of these "liberal wonders" point out that many of the super wealthy today, like Edwards, came from lower-income families and rose to greath wealth in just one generation.
Some took risks through starting businesses, working hard, taking risks, creating jobs for others, meeting payrolls, and making sound decisions.
Others, like Edwards, did it through courtroom performances and "leaching" off the misfortunes of others.
If the Left imposes its socialist model of mandated redistribution of wealth upon future generations, in the name of "solving the poverty problem," then opportunity for all wage levels will decline, resulting in an amassing of power by politicians and bureaucrats.
Ideas have consequences! A concept the Left never takes into account when spouting the "class warfare" rhetoric, ignoring the 200+ year history of America.
Good, to be respected by someone like you would be a big disappointment.
That's right. Assuming he's not on the Judiciary Committee and a nominee get to the full Senate.
Brilliant!
You don't know that.
How do you like your fair-haired boy now you Virginia Democrats?
Well those 'Joe Six Packers' as you call them, who were pi$$ed at the President and decided to teach the Republicans a lesson on immigration sure did that. Only the Republicans are no longer in control of the House and Senate, and any immigration reform with which they MIGHT have been able to agree is gone by the wayside with the Dems in charge. Hope Joe is happy with UpChuck, Pelosi, and Rangel.
Snort! And from what vast store of knowledge to you "know" how Webb would vote? (Bearing in mind, of course, that you were dumb enough to vote for him...)
No doubt I'll think of you--and others who deserted the Republican party--in the months to come.
Unless a somewhat conservative nominee makes it out of the Dem controlled Judiciary Committee (can you say, Chairman Biden or Chairman Kennedy?), Webb won't even get the opportunity to show us how he might have voted, so it doesn't make a hill of beans worth of difference.
Guess folks didn't give that too much thought before deciding to 'teach the Republicans a lesson'.
Rude, inconsiderate, spiteful, and ill-mannered.. anytime a Republican or Conservative is near.
Yet, these are the same people who preach Tolerance, Courtesy, Cultural Awareness, and Forgiveness.
Webb just proved that:
A. He is an a**hole
B. Democrats voted him in hoping he would be one.
he was elected with a bare handful over half, of the voters of VA. do not blame me for him, i despise the hubristic punk.
Sure I do.
But I can't explain why to an idiot anymore than I could explain to an idiot why the sun comes up each morning.
Electing Hillary president would "shake things up", but only an idiot would vote for a candidate for that reason.
"Webb certainly has conveyed what he is: a boor."
He is also a Larry Flynt clone -- low class; no class; purveyor of porn RAT/lib/socialist.
