Russia starts supplies of Su-30 fighters to Venezuela

10:24 | 30/ 11/ 2006

MOSCOW, November 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has shipped the first two Su-30MK2 multi-role fighters to Venezuela under a contract signed in July 2006, an aircraft manufacturing industry official said Thursday.

Russia signed $1-billion contracts on supplies of 24 Su-30MK2 Flanker fighters and 30 helicopters to Venezuela prior to this year's visit to Russia by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, triggering criticism from Washington, which regards the Venezuelan regime as a potential security threat in the region.

"The first Su-30MK2 fighters for the Venezuelan air force have been transported to Moscow by an An-124 Condor transport plane, and later they will be shipped to Venezuela," the official said, adding that two more fighters will be delivered to the Latin American country by the end of 2006.

Russian-made fighters will substitute American F-16 and French Mirage fighters currently deployed by the Venezuelan air force.

The Su-30MK2 is an export version of a formidable Su-27 Flanker air-superiority fighter capable of accomplishing a wide variety of combat missions at significant distances from the home base, in any weather conditions and severe jamming environment, both by day and night.

Do the Russians send flight instructors or does Chavez have to send his pilots to-be to Russia?

Just was wondering what kind of training camps Chavez is establishing?

Chinese models help kick the tires and light the fires at training camp.

The US Military would be wise not train any Venezuela nationals should they try to join up.

Is it my imagination or is Hugo trying to scare South America through his propaganda into thinking North America will invade them?

"HIZBALLAH LATIN AMERICA RECEIVES NEWS OF THEIR FIRST SHAHEED"

SNIPPET - QUOTE:

Given the strong affinity that Hizballah Venezuela shows for the country's current President for Life™ Hugo Chavez, it seems likely that this story has been created to provide a pretext for future "Hizballah" attacks on US and/or Jewish interests in Latin America. Teodoro says as much:

...esta es la información que tenemos de fuente no oficial que remitió a este comando, de resultar cierto tomaremos acciones extremas y gravísimas contra intereses norte americanos y judíos en Venezuela, las acciones incluyen el uso de explosivo de alto poder de destrucción.

Not sure, though there were reports that the Ruskies would open a flight training facility there for the Flanker series given that apart from Caracas,Mexico & Brazil may also opt for variants of the type.

Anyway an interesting thing to note is that these deliveries were real quick relative to date of signing of contract unlike the Indian or Malaysian deliveries.Which probably means that these are dumb down SU-30K models or even ex-Indian aircraft(which were returned for new multirole ones).

There does seem to be more than just the literal reenactment of Vietnam occurring these days, Venezuela may well be the new Cuba.

I don't know about "dumb down", might be an efficient over production, and the deal was secret until it became a timely matter to announce. Chavez does not strike me as the type to expend his money for something less.

Might make good practice drones for our boys in the F-22's!

How would these stack up to our F-16's sitting on the tarmac 38 miles away in Curaco?

Very, very well. I'm thinking probably superior to the F-16, pilots being equal.

Here's an idea, we annex Guyana. Half their population is already here, literally, and they're English speakers and they're begging to join.

We then build the "Subic Bay" of the South Atlantic there along with a couple armored divisions and several wings of F-22's when get them.

Well why not sign a friendship treaty or something like that-Better than annexation & it will sustain & boost their local economy & give uncle Sam a launchpad!!

Depends. If it's a one on one visual range engagement, the SU-30 probably has the advantage.

If the US goes in the way it usually does, well it would be a big achievement if the SU-30s take off!!

Why is that better? That country is severely depopulated from all their people moving to the US, legally I might add. We might as well just annex it and be able to do what we want.
