COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The comic book illustrator who overhauled X-Men in the 1970s and helped popularize the Marvel Comics title has died at age 63.
Dave Cockrum's wife Paty said her husband died wearing his Superman pajamas and wrapped in his Batman blanket at his Belton home Sunday after a long battle with diabetes.
At Marvel Comics, Cockrum and writer Len Wein took the X-Men comic and made it their own, adding signature characters like Storm, Mystique and Nightcrawler.
Cockrum moved to South Carolina in 2004 after being hospitalized for bacterial pneumonia.
Cox Funeral Home said Cockrum wanted no public services. His body will be cremated, and his ashes will be spread on his property

A time-honored debate:
Superman, Batman, or X-men?

I'd take either Batman or X-men any day, but

He made a significant contribution to comics history. I've been collecting the DVD-ROM sets of complete Marvel comics runs, and it's interesting to see in the letters pages where fans have written in who later became important figures in comics. Dave Cockrum was among those.

Interesting... Superman and Batman are both DC characters, not Marvel... I don't know that it means anything.
I remember when he started working on The Uncanny X-Men. Those were some of my favorites back then...

I know where you are coming from. I was a big X-Men fan back in the 1970s, and sorry to see one of their signature creators die.
But that bit about dying with Superman pajamas and a Batman blanket . . . dying with you boots on is one thing.

LOL! That site's funny!
Seriously, though, that is too bad that he died. Nightcrawler is one of my favorite X- Men.
