UN chief Kofi Annan today called for an international peace conference on Iraq that would bring all the Iraqi factions together with UN help, but stressed that it would require adequate preparations.
"I think it would be helpful to have a conference that brings everybody together, along the lines of what we did in the former Yugoslavia and others," he told reporters.
"But I don't think one can organise that conference without other specific actions being taken," he said.
"I do not believe, given the bitterness and the level of violence, that they can do it alone. The international community has to help them do it and work with them."
The outgoing secretary general, who is due to step down at the end of December after 10 years in office, also reiterated his view that Iran and Syria needed to be brought in to help in the search for a settlement to end what he described yesterday as "almost" a state of civil war in Iraq.
"I have been quite clear that the two countries (Iran and Syria) have a role to play and they should become part of the solution, and we should bring them in and get them to work with us in resolving the issues and let them assume some of the responsibilities," he said.,P> Mr Annan said he discussed his views yesterday with the Iraq Study Group, a bipartisan UN panel co-chaired by former secretary of state James Baker, a Republican, and Lee Hamilton, a former Democratic lawmaker.

Let me guess....
Leader of the Piss, er Peace conference will be Jimmy Carter.
My prediction for Nobel Peace Prize for 2007.....a toss up between Ahmanejad...and Assad. Well, that is, unless Al Sadar gets it.
"I think it would be helpful to have a conference that brings everybody together, along the lines of what we did in the former Yugoslavia and others," he told reporters."
And did the reporter ask him a simple question like "And what specifically became of, or was accomplished as a result of THAT/THOSE conferences!!!!!?"
And even if he dodged the question, why couldn't the reporter do some research and answer these questions?
I don't understand what passes for journalism today.
He thinks that this is the solution the Iraq Study Group is going to come up with, and he wants to be in the front seat.
Kofi is a lame duck. He needs to give it a rest! We're finally finished with him. Let the adults do it Kofi!!!!
Will Al Qaeda be invited?
