When I lived in south Jersey, Milton Street was a bigger agitator, and troublemaker than his corrupt brother John. I thought Milton would end up as the Mayor of Phillie, instead, he was elected to the Pennsylvania Senate as a RAT. I believe Milton was enticed into switching to the Republican party in order to break the tie between RATs and Republicans in the Pennsylvania Senate. I don't know what they promised him, but as the article suggests, he doesn't come cheap.

I don't think you buy the Street's like a sack of potatoes, I think you just rent them for awhile.

You'll get no argument from me - seems like everyone in the Street administration is under the gun - the FBI bugged his office IIRC, but the Philly PD found it in a counter-sweep.

Problem is that gangsters are like rock stars in Philly, see Jimmy Tayoun, Leland Beloff, Nicky Scarfo, Angelo Bruno, Salvy Testa...

The real question is, will Milton roll over on his brother? The feds have been building their case against the mayor for years, perhaps the testimony which could be elicited from Milton will be the last piece of the puzzle.

This is just resume enhancement for Philly politics. Gotta "Pay to Play" in Philly.

Nice stroll down memory lane. Also Buddy Cianfrani, George X. Schwartz, Earl Stoudt, Harry "The Hunchback" Riccobene. John Street was on his way to losing the election last time until the FBI probe became known. It galvanized his supporters and turned the election around. If your political career is in trouble in Philly, get yourself indicted, they will love you forever.

"Milton Street also was accused of defrauding a prospective airport contractor, who gave him $80,000 on a promise from Milton Street that he could get them a $3.2 million contract that didn't exist, prosecutors said."

Man, what a crook.

Ahh - Harry "The Hunchback" - my personal favorite. Homicidal dwarf - looked like a demented Santa Claus. Died in SCI Dallas of cancer. Scarfo's people tried to hit him twice - once the torpedo shot him 5 times (IIRC it was allegedly "Skinny Joe" Merlino)- when the gunman ran out of ammo, The hunchback charged him and took the gun away.

Don't make 'em like that anymore...

I have to admit I miss some of the stories, Sarge. Skinny Joe is currently in the fifth year of a 14 year sentence.

One of my all-time favorite corrupt Philadelphians was the old Evening Bulletin reporter Harry Karafin. He used to extort money from other crooks by threatening to go public with his information. You paid Harry, no story. Now there was a guy who knew how to use the First Amendment for his own personal enrichment.

I liked to shop at the Italian Market back in the 70s and 80s, and several of the great stores are near the large Roman Catholic church in that neighborhood. When the local philanthropist Frank Palumbo (who funded a city park, part of the Philadelphia Zoo, and countless charities to Italian-American causes) passed away, a handful of two dozen people went to the church to his memorial service. But when one of the mob bosses died, you couldn't pass in the streets for blocks around due to the long lines of funeral cars carrying mourners and thousands of flowers.

Let's not forget Ozzie Meyers and his cohort, John Murtha.
