I had someone once ask me -- doesn't it bother you that your biological clock is winding down? And I replied, "that's one of the advantages of being half-deaf -- I can't even hear that clock tick.
Thoughtful article - she understands the admonition:
"Walk a mile in my shoes" ....that some don't want shoes, some cannot have shoes and there are in fact some who don't have feet.
I for one shall not pass judgement.

Sounds like she's feeling guilty and conflicted. Why the need to apologize, if she thinks she is doing the right thing?
I wonder what brought this tirade on. I don't have kids because I never married (and am also old-fashioned enough not to have a kid outside of a marriage).
There is something intrinsicaly wrong with those who go into rages over people with kids. It shows an anti-child mentality and a selfishness that they carry like baggage.
As for me, I am grateful that my siblings have children and grandchildren. They are all so good to me and the kids are delightful. How wonderful to be able to mix with people of all ages and be comfortable with them. It's a healthy sign of maturity.
Children are expensive from the moment they are conceived. It's very discouraging. Plus you can raise your children perfectly and someone can come along and ruin your hard work.

"She is now infuriated by what she calls "that Mother Right" -- the assumption that everyone will make way for a woman with a stroller or a child in tow...."
If she REALY and TRULY didn't want children, then WHY is she so INFURIATED by a gesture of kindness to a Mom?
Me thinks she is ENVIOUS beyond words and DOES wish she had a child.

I'm 55 and we've never had any kids. I figured I would be just like my parents and I wouldn't wish that on any kid.
It's never been a problem and I don't feel the least bit guilty. I can't count the number of times I've heard this sentence, "I love my kids and am glad I had them, but if I had it to do all over again, I might do what you did."
So I say to all of you parents out there. Thanks for a difficult job well done. If your baby wants to scream at a restaurant, more power to you. I envy your patience and willpower when your teenager takes the car or your daughter goes out on a date.

As opposed to a national obsession with death ? Could she have substituted another word for obsession, like maybe fascination or enthrallment or interest? Is it just me, or does it seems like she has a beanpole up her butt?
I'd say this harridan has a few issues, fer sure.
Couple B: "Well you two shouldn't have kids".
National obsession with motherhood? Yes why don't we just do away with motherhood? We can do away with the future too!
of course, "Laurie" COULD have chosen to have children and raise them herself, maybe with a husband and without the nanny. What a novel concept!
