Welcome to Vermont, unless you're Republican
The Union Leader ^ | November 27, 2006 | Lori Saladino

I THOUGHT I'D share a little political adventure I had in Vermont recently. My in-laws were in town and we decided to take our daughter to Billings Farm. As we pulled into the parking lot I noticed three cars with anti-Bush bumper stickers. "Welcome to Vermont," I told my in-laws.

I joked with my husband that he should back our car into the parking space because of my conservative bumper stickers. "My car could get keyed," I said, half-jokingly.

We decided to live on the edge and park with the bumper stickers showing for the world to see. One bumper sticker in particular stood out that afternoon: "Vote Republican, It's Less Taxing."

After a fun afternoon, we headed back to our car. "There's a note on the windshield," I said to my husband.

Here's what it said:

all the so called NY City Progressives (socialists in plain english) started heading up to Vermont in the 70's and have now ruined a beautiful state.

Just a point here, the ed writer is falling prey to "liberal trash talk." I wouldn't call the note hateful speech. It is cowardly to pretend discussion without meeting the other person face-to-face or even signing your name. In fact, in matters of government overspending there may be a point of agreement (it is the specific spending that is the rub).
Anyhow, I feel it is important that we do not follow the liberal footsteps of exaggeration, hyperbole and lies.

Screw Vermont. I'll stay where I am. And please spread the word about how lousy the climate is here. There's already way too damm many people here and we don't need any more flatlanders effing the place up like they have with our poor neighbors, Vermont and Maine.

Vermont used to be solidly Republican. The leftists moved in and ruined the state.

That's because Repubs let them! The question is, why?

This is a shame, I just met a person from Vermont who is one of the nicest people I've met in a long time. Maybe an aberration?

Not at all - but I will bet you he was born there.

This is the first time since the 1870s that both houses of the legislature are controlled by Dems. Things are trending very bad for us in New Hampshire -- and Sununu has a giant red bullseye on his back.

You might enjoy this story. My son was working for a horse show in downstate NY....one of his jobs was parking cars and the ones with liberal bumper stickers he would park far away and if he saw a liberal car while driving the water truck he would "accidentally" water the car....he had some kind of fun....

One or two elections does not equal a long-term trend.

Hate to disagree with ya here but NH has been turning blue for a while and the process is almost complete. You just can't live in the midst of three of the filthiest, most Marxist states in the country...absorb their refugees...and avoid turning deep blue yourself.

NH has,I'll wager, one of the lowest native born to born-elsewhere ratios in the country...right up there with FL,CA,AZ and NV.

You're probably right. Heck, in my family, only me and my daughter were born here. My wife is from Massachusetts and my son was born in Virginia (when I was in the Marine Corps, so I guess that doesn't really count). Even my mother was born in Vermont. But she's good native stock, too.

Old NH has died. I'll bet that even the library at UNH is open on Sundays now.

Definition of a Democrat: a nosy Parker who takes unbridled offense at the notion that someone, somewhere, might be minding his own business.

Parker happens to be my grandson's name and is an ancestral name in my lineage. Now I'm an insulted victim of your insensitivity.
May I use that definition?

I was in Putney over the summer with my mother who happens to be a die hard lefty. Even she was appalled that a shopkeeper had the nerve to assume we both automatically "hated" Bush after hearing we lived in DC, he began to tell us how he had taken his young sons to protest in front of the white house. I held my tongue, but bought nothing from him. Funnier was the fact that his family had fled NYC after 9-11...how brave of him to flee to the wilds of Putney.

Vermont, the entire State is nothing but a bunch of welfare recipients, knotheads and whiners.

"'Less Taxing'? I find your Republican 'leadership' to be incredibly taxing -- taxing on the health, safety, well being, and moral compass of our country! Weakened pollution laws tax our health! Record deficits tax our children and grandchildren! Illegal, immoral wars tax the safety of all of us! How can you support a party infested with corruption, lies and deception? The Republicans are morally bankrupt!"

If this were to be submitted as a letter to the editor of just about any MSM newspaper it would be immediately published.

I don't know why there are so many godless leftists in Vermont. Someone once told me hippies from the 60's took infested the place about 35 years ago.

Lived in Brookline, myself, mainly because of the number of kosher food stores for several years. Third floor walkup brownstone off MA ave --- had green line on it, very nice for the price.

Massachusetts Avenue does not run through Brookline. It goes from Boston, to Cambridge, Arlington, Lexington...

If you lived on the Greenline in Brookline, You may have lived on Commonwealth Avenue.

This report is a step up from the sixties crap I remember just prior to my draft notice (emancipation).

Back then nobody bothered to leave a note, it was just key the car, tear the bumper sticker, and run tell everyone what a heroic activist you were.

And bum a joint if at all possible.
