"Can I ask the naive question why didn't he just call an ambulance or take the child to the hospital?"Maybe for the same reason he didn't bother to take her temperature (under the armpit)... or for the same reason he didn't bother to protect her skin from direct contact with a source of freezer burn when he stuck her in a freezer... or lied about having put her in the freezer just 40 seconds before Mom walked in and found her (yeah, sure)... or closed the freezer door on her... or ignored her screams.
He wanted her dead and probably wasn't expecting her mother to come home when she did.

He just sounds really really stupid, not malicious.I find it hard to believe someone can be that stupid.

the child had only been in the freezer for about 40 seconds.
This jerk needs to experiment a bit more. I've found that you can get freezer burns in much less time. Never put a child into a freezer for more than 10 seconds. Jeez, some people are so stupid.

A Canadian lady I know online, was describing how great the Canadian healthcare system is: she gets to go to the doctor "every three months" for a checkup! Wowzer!

Or at least sent to Minnesota for a while.

Very true it is the breakdown of the traditional family that is at the root of all of this.

Smart comments but unfortunately some reading may take notice and be reluctant to get emergency help.
We forget that many are not able to sieve the flippant and political points from what we would actually do in in reality if it happened to us.
If you were in Canada and had an emergency you would dial for the ambulance and I suspect like the UK the emergency treatment is probably pretty good it is the long term non life threatening under socialised medicine that is the problem not the emergency care.

I suspect they do we have an NHS help line in Britain I would like Canada does as well. All chemists in Britain and doctors surgeries have cards with on the counter with the phone number you can ring for advice.

I am not for a government health system but it worries me that some of the comments on this thread will be taken literally and people will not seek help when they need it.
Yes in Britain we have waiting lists to see consultants etc but not for emergency care especially in the case of a baby with a high fever. That is why some people deliberately collapse and get taken to hospital to jump the queue. I doubt if the wait in the emergency room is any less in the States than in Britain.
Other aspects of your medical system are better than ours but emergency care is not one of them Britain and I am sure Canada as well would be very similar to the US.

I realize the people tend to become defensive about their homeland, but why are you arguing for socialized medicine on FR?
