"If the GOP ever wants its credibility back, they've got to return big-time to the basic principles of conservatism: small government, free markets, traditional Judæo-Christian values, national integrity (borders) and low taxes."

We are going to have to return to that, but right now we are not credible in those issues. I think we need to reinvent ourselves. and that requires being out in the wilderness for 4-8 years. I would rather be out in the wilderness under a moderately conservative Republican than a flaming liberal Democrat. some one like Giuliani can appeal to the moderates with some liberal positions on some social issues while hitting home runs on the issues where he shares the values of most of us. Everything he accomplished in NYC was in a conservative vein. But, then again I am rather frightened by his open doors stance on immigration and gay marriage. we will have to look around. We have to hold the conservatives and win back the moderates or face doom in 2008. If we are going to win back Congress in 2008 we have to expand the playing field I think.

Princip. Conservative replied elsewhere, but I wanted to point out that Ohio is projected to lose 2 seats in 2010 anyway.

We just have to build. We need someone who can broaden the party and be the John the Baptist for he who will come. In '94 we had all of the House seats in Long Island and around Phildelphia. Now we are just losing them one by one. That is happening everywhere in the north. I think maybe we should find someone in the swing belt of Pennsylvania west to the Great lakes,Iowa and Missouri. But, we should not be writing off the Northeast or anywhere else. we need someone who can think out of the box and is genuinely innovative in approach. The only ones like that Are Rudy and Newt. But, with Rudy we do need a partial change in positions and Newt has towering strengths but glaring faults that make him a loser.

I'm not saying that the anti-immigration thing caused tons of people to vote against him. They all voted for the immigration propositions.

It just wasn't enough to interest most voters in keeping Hayworth. The grassroots support for tough-on-immigration is non-existent -- fool's gold.

Here you go. Ignore the "2004 estimated" column, that's meaningless data.

Thank you for your reply on reapportionment projections. since asking for that link I found a few of my own. I thought it odd that the one you had did not show losses in Michigan. But here is another one below.

Your link is more recent, and I was also surprised by the numbers for Michigan. Thanks.

One thing, though, Louisiana is clearly losing a seat. They were barely holding on to their 7th seat before Katrina hit.

I know some good Conservatives like Rick Santorum lost. But, "WE" Freepers didn't lose it for them; they lost it for themselves by doing very little while they had the White House and both Houses of Congress for six years. They spent like drunk Democrats; crawled in bed with the likes of Jack Abramhoff and, regardless of what anyone says, they covered up for a panty-waist peodophile.

I think it was clearly pointed out Hayworth won comfortably in 2004, 2002 and lost in a Republican leaning district in 2006. What changed in 2006? In the 2 years since his last win, he was constantly on national TV, Fox, CNN dobbs etc making his own opinion well heard on immigration issues and attacking President Bush. Infact i think he even outdid tancredo with his relentless focus and appearance in the media on this issue. To say his played no part in his defeat is ridiculous and reveals your delusion. It is again ridiculous to claim that he lost because he was out campaigned by the Dem to be harder on this issue.

When other Arizona house Republicans won comfortably and Hayworth is only one who lost( along with Graf), it simply shows clearly that simply a hardline blowhard rheoteric on immigration does not translate in to a electoral winning strategy.

Disagree. It certainly wasn't fool's gold for Bilbray. Health care, illegal immigration, and foreign policy will be the issues in 2008. No matter how the politicians try to spin the issue or whatever legislation is passed, it will be a case of who do you believe, the politicians/MSM or your lying eyes? Illegal immigration has metastasized throughout the country. Individual communities are taking things into their own hands. Our schools, hospitals, social welfare systems, and penal systems are being stressed to the breaking point. If we have an economic downturn, the issue will become even more visible and incendiary.

Here is a good presentation on the impact of LEGAL immigration, which has increased from 178,000 a year prior to 1965 to one million annually. Add to these numbers, 500,000 to 1 million illegal aliens annually and you have a disaster in the making.

I didn't say it played no role for any voter. I said it was not the central issue. Certainly, Mitchell did not use it against Hayworth in his campaign. I provided you with a link to a Mitchell political ad. Corruption in the form of his link to Abramoff and his political contributions to Hayworth, the $100,000 payment from him to his wife for campaign services, Hayworth's staunch support of Bush policies on Iraq and embryonic stem cell research played, my opinion more of a role. Add to that a popular former mayor and state senator as the opponent and you have a much closer race. If you notice, Bush only pulled 53% in this district against Gore.

When other Arizona house Republicans won comfortably and Hayworth is only one who lost( along with Graf), it simply shows clearly that simply a hardline blowhard rheoteric on immigration does not translate in to a electoral winning strategy.

Did it work for Tancredo? You are entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts. I have a home in Scottsdale. Immigration was not the main issue in this campaign no matter how much you stomp your foot and get red in the face.
